SENIOR PROFESSIONAL: ARTS AND CULTURE

The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Senior Professional: Arts and Culture in the Department of Student Life and Experience.

The position holder is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing arts and culture programs, events, and initiatives within the university. The Senior Professional: Arts and Culture will lead the development, coordination, and promotion of arts and cultural programmes that enrich student life, support national heritage, and contribute to the University's engagement mandate.

Key Responsibilities: i. Contribute to the development and implementation of a comprehensive Arts and Culture strategy aligned with the University’s vision and mission; ii. Manage and coordinate student arts programmes, including music, drama, dance, visual arts, and cultural festivals; iii. Promote cultural diversity, inclusion, and heritage preservation within the UB community; iv. Organise, promote and oversee major university cultural events, exhibitions, and performances; v. Facilitate and nurture partnerships with local, regional, and international arts and cultural institutions; vi. Provide advisory support to student clubs and societies involved in arts and cultural activities; vii. Identify funding opportunities and support grant proposals for arts initiatives; viii. Manage budgets, procurement, and resources for arts and culture programmes; ix. Monitor and evaluate programme effectiveness and prepare reports for management; x. Supervise and mentor staff and student leaders involved in arts programmes; xi. Contribute to the development of and implement departmental, sectional and unit level strategies, policies, plans and procedures; xii. Collaborate with various departments, faculty, and community partners to create and execute engaging cultural events; xiii. Oversee arts venues and facilities, ensuring they are well-maintained and equipped for artistic performances and exhibitions; xiv. Participate in the identification and mitigation of operational risks; xv. Actively engage with the professional community to support and develop expertise in an area of profession; xvi. Undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor within the role.

Requirements: Applicants should have; i. A Bachelor’s degree in Arts Administration, Cultural Studies, Performing Arts, Heritage, or a related field; ii. A Master’s degree in the relevant discipline will be an added advantage; iii. At least 4 years of relevant experience in arts and cultural programme management, three (3) of which should have been at the officer level, preferably within a higher education or public sector environment; iv. Demonstrated experience in organising large-scale cultural events.

Key Competencies and Skills: i. Strong knowledge of Botswana’s cultural heritage and contemporary arts sector; ii. Excellent organisational and project management skills; iii. Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement abilities; iv. Leadership and team management skills; v. Financial management and budgeting competence; vi. Effective communication and report-writing skills; vii. Creativity, innovation, and strategic thinking; viii. Special Requirements; ix. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, during events; x. Experience working with students and youth development programmes will be an advantage.
