SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN PLANNING THEORY

VACANCY NO: FET/AP04/2023

The Department of Architecture and Planning offers BSc and MA (Professional) degrees in Urban and Regional Planning. It is looking for an academic to complement its teaching team to develop and deliver the two programmes into reputable academic and professional qualifications in Botswana and beyond.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to (i) teach Planning Theory courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and contribute to the emerging areas of Planning thought. Scholars whose work advances current debates in Southern and global urbanism would be most welcome. The candidate should be able to also (ii) supervise undergraduate and graduate student research projects; (iii) initiate, promote and participate in research activities in the planning theory discourse; (iv) participate in all academic and professional activities of the department; (v) carry out any other academic and administrative responsibilities as and when assigned by the Head of Department. For a Senior Lecturer, duties will further include to (vi) provide academic leadership and act as a mentor to junior academic staff; (vii) raise/solicit research funds from funding agencies within and outside the country; and (viii) develop collaborative relationships with other colleagues in academia and industry within and outside the country. The Department reserves the right to allocate other courses in addition to those outlined above.

Requirements: 

Senior Lecturer level; one should demonstrate an excellent reputation and leadership in the field, as demonstrated by publications in accredited journals, post graduate supervision and high-level professional involvement. Candidates should have: (i) A Ph.D. in Urban Planning or a closely allied field (ii) At least 3 years of teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) A cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 pieces of research products published by recognized publishers, 4 of which should be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases (e.g., Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and IBSS – International Bibliography of the Social Sciences). The remaining 2 publications could be journal articles, book, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (iv) Sustained research output: a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication every 2 years; (v) Scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; (vi) be lead or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles; (vii) Publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (viii) Some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions, etc. (ix) recognized as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer of refereed/accredited national and regional publishers; editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation to serve as keynote speaker at national and/or international conferences); and (x) Evidence of governance and social engagement activities.

Lecturer level: The candidate should have: (i) a Ph.D. in Urban Planning or a closely allied field, with Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Urban Planning or cognate fields. (ii) show evidence of engagement in research; The following will be added advantages: (i) teaching experience in the area of Planning Theory at university or comparable institution, (ii) experience in professional planning practice, (iii) evidence of governance and social engagement, and (iv) registration with a recognizable national or international professional body.

N.B In special circumstances, candidates who do not have a Ph.D. may be considered provided they have; (i) a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning or a cognate subject, AND (ii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning or cognate field with at least a 2(i) pass or equivalent (GPA of at least 3.6 on a 5-point scale).

The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of publications clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers, (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates published, name of publishers and name(s) of co-authors, if any, and number of pages.  The work should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journal articles, non-refereed works and consultancies.

Remuneration: The University offers a salary and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications.
