FACULTY OF MEDICINE
DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

Duties: the successful applicant will: (i) teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate residents; (ii) conduct research and/or creative professional works in his/her areas of expertise and supervise undergraduate students and postgraduate residents’ research project; (iii) provide service to the university, profession and community; (iv) provide clinical care in affiliated hospitals, and; (v) carry out any other duties as assigned by the Head of the Department.
Requirements: (i) at least a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Ophthalmology or equivalent; (ii) a first degree in medicine (MBBS, MBChB, MD degree) or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution; (iii) a formal degree qualification as a specialist in Ophthalmology; (iv) the qualification must be registered with or registrable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (v) at least 3 years relevant teaching experience at a University or comparable institution; or 1 year of sustained mentorship/practice related training which would be considered as an alternative; (vi) minimum of 6 pieces of research products published by recognised publishers, 3 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals indexed in internationally recognised indexing databases; (vii) sustained professional research output e.g. a minimum of 1 peer-reviewed publication every 2 years or new creative professional works in the last 6 years; (viii) be lead and/or last author in at least 2 of the refereed journal publications; (ix) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (x) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions, etc.; (xi) recognised as being of at least national research or effective clinical professional standing; (xii) successful supervision/co-supervision of research projects/post-doctoral/clinical research fellow supervision; (xiii) evidence of social engagement and governance.
Added advantage: (i) a demonstration of effective academic leadership; (ii) sustained research activity; on-going internally and externally-funded research projects; (iii) research/clinical effectiveness awards and other forms research recognition; (iv) examiner for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally.
Requirements: (i) at least a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Ophthalmology or equivalent; (ii) a first degree in (MBBS, MBChB, MD degree) or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution; (iii) the qualification must be registered with or registrable by the Botswana Health Professions Council; (iv) evidence of engagement in research, including published journal articles, presenting scholarly work at seminars and conferences locally as well as internationally, participation in research teams and collaborative programmes, participation in reference committees.
Added advantages: (i) experience of teaching at a university or comparable institution; (ii) evidence of governance and social engagement.
The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of the publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any. Publications should be categorised into: books, book chapters, monographs, refereed and non-refereed journals, etc.
