SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING (1 Contract position)

The University of Botswana invites applications from suitably qualified citizens for the position of Lecturer in the Department of Architecture and Planning. The selected candidate will primarily teach courses in the Urban and Regional Planning Programme, which is fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to (i) teach Planning Techniques courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and contribute to emerging areas and/or trends in this specialty. A specialized skill in utilizing spatial data to project population trends, land use, infrastructure services, and strategic planning is essential. (ii) take an active part in the supervision and assessment of undergraduate and graduate students’ research projects; (iii)  initiate, promote and participate in research activities in the urban planning techniques discourse; v) participate in all academic and professional activities of the department including research, governance and social engagement; (iv) carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of Department. For a Senior Lecturer, duties will further include; (vii) providing academic leadership and acting as a mentor to junior academic staff; (viii) raising/soliciting research funds from funding agencies within and outside the country; and (ix) developing collaborative relationships with other colleagues in academia and industry within and outside the country. The Department reserves the right to allocate other courses in addition to those outlined above.

Requirements:

Senior Lecturer: Candidates should have: (i) a Doctorate (PhD) in Urban & Regional Planning or related field(ii a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning/Planning Techniques or related field (iii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning/Demography and Statistics or related field; (iv) at least 3 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (v) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 pieces of research products published by recognised publishers, 4 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases. The remaining 2 publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (ix) sustained research output: a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication every 2 years; (x) scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; (xi) lead and/or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles; (xiii) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (xiv) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 1 of the these); (xv) recognised as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers; Editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation as key note speaker at national and/or international conferences (required in at least 1 of the these) and (xvi) evidence of governance and social engagement.  The following will be added advantages: (i) sustained research activity: on-going internally and/or externally supported research; (ii) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; (iii) examiner/ moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally and (iv) effective and experience in running a programme/course, etc.

Lecturer:  Applicants should have: (i) at least PhD degree in Urban & Regional Planning or related field; (ii) a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning/Planning Techniques or related field; (iii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning/Demography and Statistics or related field; (iv) show evidence of engagement in research; (v) evidence of Registration or eligibility to register with with a recognizable national or international professional body. The following will be added advantages: (i) teaching experience in the area of Planning Techniques at university or comparable institution; (ii) evidence of governance and social engagement.

N.B. In special circumstances, candidates who do not have a Ph.D. may be considered provided they have; (i) a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning/Planning Techniques or related field, (ii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning/Demography and Statistics or related field with at least a 2(i) pass or equivalent (GPA of at least 3.6 on a 5-point scale); AND (iii) experience in professional planning practice.

The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters, and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors, if any, and number of pages. The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects.
