The University of Botswana (UB), a state – owned tertiary education institution, invites suitably qualified, and experienced candidates for the position of Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) Teach undergraduate medical students and graduate students in the Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (MMed) program; (ii) conduct research in his/her areas of expertise and supervise medical students’ and residents’ research projects; (iii) Provide clinical care in affiliated hospitals; and (iv) carry out any other duties as assigned by department chairperson.
Requirements: Applicants should have: (i) a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery or other recognized medical doctor qualification (MD); (ii) a Master of Medicine degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or equivalent from a recognized institution; (iii) the qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iv) 3 years university teaching experience or equivalent tertiary institution; (v) evidence of professional practice in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with an active licence to practise as appropriate; (vi) a minimum of 6 research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings) published by recognized publishers, 3 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The applicant must be a first or last author in at least 2 of the refereed journal articles.
OR Show evidence of clinical excellence (CE): high patient/community satisfaction; evidence of community/clinical outreach for specialized referrals; demonstrated practice of evidence-based medicine/ community interventions; evidence of quality improvement initiatives; reduction of clinical errors; effective and skilful interdisciplinary clinical work or community based public health programs (minimum of 2 CE outputs is required); 1 CE output is equivalent to 1 article; vi) sustained research output of a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication per year OR new CE output every 2 years in 6 years; (vii) the publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; with some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. ( at least 1 of these is required); (viii) recognition of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/ accredited national and regional publishers, editorial board member of at least national publisher in a relevant field, invitation as keynote speaker at national and international conferences/symposia (required in at least 1 of these) (ix) active maintenance of a license to practice issued by the relevant professional licensing authority; and (x)evidence of governance and social engagement.
The following are added advantages: (i) sustained research activity; on-going internally and/or externally funded research projects; (ii) research/clinical effectiveness awards and other forms of research recognition; (iii) examiner for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally; (iv) research collaboration with other institutions or organizations; (iv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (v) Evidence of a recognized sub-speciality certification in OBGYN.
