SENIOR LECTURER/ LECTURER- INTERNAL MEDICINE

LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER

VACANCY NO: FM/ IM 2/2020

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach undergraduate medical students and graduate students in the Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine (MMed); and, (ii) conduct research.

Requirements:

Senior lecturer:  Applicants should have: (i) a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBChB) or MD degree or equivalent; (ii) a formal degree qualification as a specialist in Internal Medicine; (iii) the qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iv) 3 years of university teaching experience or equivalent; (v) evidence of professional specialization in Internal Medicine and evidence of active license to practice (where appropriate); (vi) a minimum of 6 pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc.) published by recognized publishers, 3 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining 3 publications could be books, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc. published by recognized publishers  OR evidence of clinical excellence (CE):  high patient/community satisfaction; evidence of community/clinical outreach for specialized referrals; demonstrated practice of evidence-based medicine/ community interventions; evidence of quality improvement initiatives; reduction of clinical errors; effective and skillful interdisciplinary clinical work or community based public health programs (minimum of 2 CE outputs is required); 1 CE output is equivalent to 1 article; (vii) sustained research output; a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication per year OR new CE output every 2 years in 6 years; (viii) paper/poster presentation at national and/or international conferences in any discipline in Internal medicine; (ix) be first  and /or last author in at least half (2 of 3) refereed journal publications; (x) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (xi) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required, at least 1 of these); (xii) recognized as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/ accredited national and regional publishers, editorial board member of at least national publisher in a relevant field, invitation as keynote speaker at national and international conferences/symposia (required in at least 1 of these); (xiii) active maintenance of a license to practice issued by the relevant professional licensing authority; (xiv) evidence of governance and social engagement. The following are added advantages: (i) sustained research activity; on-going internally and/or externally funded research projects; (ii) research/clinical effectiveness awards and other forms of research recognition; (iii) examiner for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally; (iv) research collaboration with other institutions or organizations; (iv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (v) Evidence of sub-specialization in internal medicine.

Lecturer:  Applicants should have: (i) a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBChB) or MD degree or equivalent; (ii) a formal degree qualification as a specialist in Internal Medicine; (iii) the qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iv) evidence of professional specialization in Internal Medicine and evidence of active license to practice (where appropriate). The following will be added advantages: (i) Evidence of sub-specialization in internal medicine; (ii) evidence of governance and social engagement; and, (iii) experience of teaching at a university or comparable institution.

Attributes and skills required: (i) Excellent communication and organizational skills; (ii) Strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University; (ii) Good management, human relations, sound analytical and coordinating skills.
