SENIOR LECTURER IN ARCHAEOLOGY (Citizens Only) - Contract/Permanent Position

FACULTY OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND MUSEUM STUDIES

Duties:

  1. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses.
  2. The candidate should be able to teach at least the following courses: Georchaeology, Environmental Archaeology, Archaeological Heritage Management, Introduction to Archaeology, Introduction to World Prehistory, Introduction to Archaeological Theory, Introduction to Archaeological Method, Introduction to African Archaeology, Introduction to Archaeological Theory, Research Methods in Archaeology, Research Project Proposal, Archaeological Heritage Management, Quantitative Technique, Complex Societies, Advanced Archaeological Theory and Archaeology of Botswana.
  3.  The Department reserves the right to allocate other courses in addition to those outlined above.
  4. The successful candidate must also be able to take an active part in the supervision and assessment of undergraduate and post graduate research work.
  5. The successful candidate will also undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by his/her supervisor.     

Requirements:

  1. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Archaeology and related areas
  2. Master’s degree in Archaeology or related discipline
  3. Three (3) years teaching experience at a university or comparable institution
  4. An excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least six (6) pieces of research products (e.g., articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc.) published by recognised publishers, four (4) of which should be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised databases. The remaining two (2) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognised publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of four (4) articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher.
  5. Sustained research output: a minimum of one (1) peer reviewed publication every two (2) years.
  6. Scholarly presentations at national and and/or international conferences.
  7. Be lead and/or single author in at least two (2) refereed journal articles.
  8. Publications should be spread nationally and /or internationally and across journals.
  9. Some research impact, including, but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions, etc. (required in at least one (1) of the these.
  10. Recognised as being of at least national research standing (e.g., reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers); editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation keynote speaker at national/and or international conferences (required in at least one (1) of these).
  11. Evidence of governance and social engagement activities.

The following will be added advantages:

  1. Sustained research activity; on-going internally supported research.
  2. Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate.
  3. Examiner/moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or graduate research.
  4. Evidence of effective academic leadership; a multi-disciplinary experience in teaching, research, administration, or consultancy work, as well as capacity to handle short-term executive training courses.

The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors, if any, and number of pages. The works should be categorised into books, book chapters, refereed journal articles, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects, etc.
