SENIOR LECTURER IN ANESTHESIA AND CRITICAL CARE (3-year contract)

The University of Botswana (UB), a state – owned tertiary education institution, invites suitably qualified, and experienced candidates for the position of Senior Lecturer in Anesthesia and Critical Care.  

Duties: the successful applicant will: (i) teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate residents; (ii) conduct research and/or creative professional works in his/her areas of expertise and supervise undergraduate students and postgraduate residents’ research projects; (iii) provide academic leadership and mentorship within the department; (iv) provide service to the university, profession and community; (v) provide clinical care in affiliated hospitals; and (vi) carry out any other duties as assigned by the Departmental Chairperson.

Requirements: (i) at least a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Anesthesia or an equivalent specialist qualification in Anesthesia and Critical Care; (ii) a first degree in Medicine (MBBS, MBChB, MD degree, or equivalent qualification) from a recognized institution; (iii) the qualification must be registered with or registrable by the Botswana Health Professions Council; (iv) at least 3 years of relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (v) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications, with at least 6 research products published by recognized publishers, 3 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals indexed in internationally recognized databases. The remaining publications may include journal articles, book chapters, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, etc., published by recognized publishers; (vi) sustained research output, including a minimum of 1 peer-reviewed publication per year; (vii) scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; (viii) lead and/or last authorship in at least 2 refereed journal articles; (ix) publications spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (x) some evidence of research impact, including but not limited to citations, h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, or publications prescribed as texts in other institutions (evidence required in at least one of these areas); (xi) recognition of at least national research standing, for example: reviewer for refereed/accredited national or regional publishers; editorial board member of a national publisher in a relevant field; or invitation as a keynote speaker at national and/or international conferences (evidence required in at least one of these areas); (xii) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xiii) evidence of supervision of undergraduate and/or postgraduate research; an (xiv) evidence of contribution to professional and academic activities relevant to the discipline. Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate will be an added advantage.

The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects
