Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for the post of Professor/Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Geography Education, Department of Languages & Social Sciences Education, Faculty of Education.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach Geography Education courses to graduate and undergraduate students; (ii) provide academic leadership through the enhancement of teaching, research, professional and community engagement; (iii) take an active part in the supervision and assessment of graduate and undergraduate students’ research projects; (iv) carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of Department.
Requirements:
Professor: Candidates should have: (i) a Doctorate in Geography Education or related field; (ii) a Master degree in Geography Education or related field; (iii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography Education or related field; (iv) have at least nine (9) years of relevant teaching experience at university or comparable institution; (v) have a minimum of twenty four (24) pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. Twelve (12) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining twelve (12) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher (vi) sustained research output: a minimum of three (3) peer reviewed publications (e.g. journal articles, book chapter, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc. every four years; (vii) sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g. funded/commissioned); (viii) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years; (ix) the candidate must be first author in at least one-quarter of the required journal publications, depending on disciplinary expectations. There should be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students (x) publications are spread internationally and across journals; (xi) significant research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (at least three of these); (xii) recognized as being of national and international research standing (e.g. peer reviewing of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/reviewer for refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of international publishers in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international conferences (at least three of these); (xiii) research collaborations with other institutions or organizations; (xiv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xv) successful supervision of four Masters students or co-supervision of six Masters students or supervision of two PhD student or co-supervision of four PhD students; (xvi) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses internationally; (xvii) evidence of governance and social engagement activities; and (xviii) Demonstration of effective leadership in the area of Geography Education, etc. Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate will be an added advantage.
Associate Professor: The candidate should have: (i) a Doctorate in Geography Education or related field; (ii) a Master degree in Geography Education or related field; (iii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography Education or related field (iv) have at least six (6) years of relevant teaching experience at university or comparable institution; (v) have a minimum of twelve (12) pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. Eight (8) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining four (4) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher (vi) sustained research output: a minimum of 2 peer reviewed publications (e.g. journal articles, book chapter, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc. every three years; (vii) sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g. funded/commissioned); (viii) regular paper/poster presentation at national but also increasingly at international conferences; (ix) the candidate must be first author in at least one-third of the required journal publications, depending on disciplinary expectations. There should be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (x) publications are spread internationally and across journals; (xi) recognized research impact including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (at least two of these); (xii) recognized as being of national but increasingly international research standing (e.g. peer reviewing of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer for refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international conferences (at least two of these); (xiii) research collaborations with other institutions or organizations; (xiv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xv) successful supervision of two Masters students or co-supervision of four Masters students or supervision of one PhD student or co-supervision of two PhD students; and (xvi) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses nationally and/or internationally; (xvii) evidence of governance and social engagement activities; and (xviii) Demonstration of effective leadership in the area of Geography Education, etc. Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate will be an added advantage.
Senior Lecturer: Candidates should have: (i) a Doctoral Degree in Geography Education; ii) a Master degree in Geography Education or related field; iii) At least 3 years teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iv) a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography Education or related; (v) have a minimum of six (6) pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. Four (4) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining two (2) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher (vi) sustained research output: a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publications (e.g. journal articles, book chapter, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc. every two years; (vi) scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; (vii) be lead and/or single author in at least 2 referred journal articles; (viii) Publications should be spread nationally and /or internationally and across journals; (ix) Some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions, etc. (at least 1 of the these); (x) recognized as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers); editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation keynote speaker at national/and or international conferences (at least 1 of the these); (xi) Evidence of governance and social engagement activities. The following are encouraged: (i) Research collaboration with other institutions or organizations and (ii) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University. The following will be added advantages: (i) sustained research activity; on-going internally and/or externally supported research (e.g. funded/commissioned); (ii) Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; (iii) Examiner/moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally; (iv) Demonstration of effective leadership in the area of Geography Education, etc.
Lecturer: Applicants should have: i) a Doctoral Degree in Geography Education or related field; ii) a Master degree in Geography Education or related field; iii) Bachelor’s Degree in Geography Education or related field; iv) show evidence of engagement in research; iv) teaching experience at University level or comparable institution, Governance and Social Engagement and demonstration of effective leadership will be added advantages.
NB: Applicants with a Master’s degree in Geography Education or related areas with a relevant Bachelor’s degree or related field with at least 2(i) pass/GPA of at least 3.6 or equivalent may be considered under special circumstances.
The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings),dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects.
