VACANCY NO: FE/PE 01/2023 - PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER IN LANGUAGE

EDUCATION (Contract position)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the post of Professor in Language Education, Department of Primary Education, Faculty of Education.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach language education courses to graduate and undergraduate students; (ii) provide academic leadership through the enhancement of teaching, research, professional and community service; (iii) take an active part in the supervision and assessment of graduate and undergraduate students’ research projects; (iv) carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of Department.

Requirements:

Professor: (i) a Doctorate in Applied Linguistics or related field: (ii) have at least nine(9) years of relevant teaching experience at university or comparable institution; (iii) have a minimum of twenty-four (24) pieces of research products (e.g articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc) published by recognized publishers.  Twelve (12) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases.  The remaining (12) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers; (iv) an academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles output in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality of standing (v) sustained research output: a minimum of 3 peer reviewed publications every four years; (vi) Sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g funded/commissioned); (vii) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years; (viii) be lead and/or single author in at least one-quarter of the required journal publications.   There should also be evidence  of mentorship of early career scholar/graduate students; (ix) publications should be spread internationally and across journals; (x) significant research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publication that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in a least 3 of these); (xi) acknowledged by peers as being of national and international research standing (e.g peer review of new research proposals; reference in research committees, editor/quest editor reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international symposia(required in at least 3 of these.; (xii) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xiii) research collaborations with other institutions or organisations; (xiv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xv) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses internationally.  The following will be added advantages i) research awards and other forms of research recognition where appropriate will be an added advantage.

 

Associate Professor: Applicants should have: (i) a Doctorate in Applied Linguistics or related discipline; (ii) at least 6 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) a minimum of 12 pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. 8 of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining 4 publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (iv) sustained research output: a minimum of 2 peer reviewed publications every 3 years; (v) sustained research activity; ongoing externally supported research (e.g funded or commissioned); (vi) regular paper/poster presentations at national but also increasingly at international conferences; (vii) be lead and/or single author in at least one-third of the required journal publications. There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (viii) publications should be spread internationally and across journals; (viii) recognizable research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 2 of the these); (ix) recognized as being of national but increasingly international research standing (e.g. peer reviewing of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international conferences (required in at least 2 of the these); (x) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xi) research collaborations with other institutions or organisations; (xii) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xiii) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD thesis nationally and/or internationally. The following will be added advantages: (i) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; (ii) and multi-disciplinary experience in teaching, research, administration or consultancy work.

 

Senior Lecturer: Candidates should have: (i) At least a relevant doctorate in Applied Linguistics; (ii) At least 3 years teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) An excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 pieces of research products published by recognized publishers, 4 of which should be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining 2 publications could be journal articles, books chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in referred/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (iv) Sustained research output: a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication every 2 years; (v) Scholarly presentations at national and and/or international conferences; (vi) be lead and/or single author in at least 2 referred journal articles; (vii) Publications should be spread nationally and /or internationally and across journals; (viii) Some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions, etc. (required in at least 1 of the these; (ix) recognized as being of at least national research standing (eg reviewer of for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers); editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation keynote speaker at national/and or international conferences (required in at least 1 of the these); (x) Evidence of governance and social engagement activities. The following will be added advantages: (i) Sustained research activity; on-going internally supported research; (ii) Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; (iii) Examiner/moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or graduate; (iv) effective and experience in running a programme/course, etc.

The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings),dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors if any and number of pages.  The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects.

NB: In special circumstances a Masters’ degree in Language Education or related fields may be considered, provided that the applicant has a relevant Bachelor’s degree with a 2(i) pass.
