PROFESSOR IN MEDIA STUDIES - DEPARTMENT OF MEDIA STUDIES (Contract)

VACANCY NO: IRC 1065 - PROFESSOR IN MEDIA STUDIES (Contract)

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in any two or more of the following: media studies, journalism, radio broadcasting and integrated communication integrated communication and digital media; (ii) supervise undergraduate and post graduate student’s projects as need may arise; (iii) participate in the academic, governance and social engagement in media related fields; (iv) and perform any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of Department.

Requirements: (i) a Doctorate in Media or Communication studies or related field, (ii) a Masters Degree in Media or Communication studies or related field; (iii) with a Bachelors degree of at least 2.1 or equivalent in Media or Communication Studies or related field; and have at least seven (7) years relevant teaching experience at university or comparable institution; (iv) have a minimum of twenty-four (24) pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. Twelve (12) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining twelve (12) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers; (v) An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality of standing (vi) sustained research output: a minimum of 3 peer reviewed publications every four years;  (vii) Sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g. funded/ commissioned); (viii) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years; (ix) be lead and/or single author in at least ten (10) of the required journal publications. There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (x) publications should be spread internationally and across journals; (xi) significant research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 3 of these); (xii) acknowledged by peers as being of national and international research standing (e.g. peer review of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international/symposia (required in at least 3 of the these); (xiii) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xiv) research collaborations with other institutions or organizations; (xv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xvi) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses internationally. The following will be added advantages: (i) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate will be an added advantage.

The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects.
