PROFESSIONAL: SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER (Pensionable)

The position holder is responsible for ensuring that deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals have equitable access to educational materials, lectures, meetings, and campus activities. The position holder will assist in providing sign language interpretation services, collaborating with students and university staff, and promoting accessibility and inclusivity.

Duties: a. Assist in providing professional sign language interpreting services for lectures, tutorials; laboratory sessions, classes, workshops, meetings, events, and other university-related activities. b. Assist in interpreting spoken language into appropriate sign language and vice versa. c. Assist in facilitating effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and their instructors, peers, and university staff. d. Assist in translating and converting course materials into sign language as required. e.  Assist in ensuring that course materials are accessible to students with hearing impairments. f. Assist in promoting awareness of and comprehension of deaf culture and sign language amongst the university community. g. Ensure that the needs and interests of students who are deaf or have hearing impairment are represented, so that they have access to university resources and services.

Qualification Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in Sign Language, Deaf Education, Special Education or any other related field is required.

Experience Requirements: No prior work experience is required.

Other Requirements: a. Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter, b. Cultural competency and an understanding of Deaf culture and communication and c. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
