PROFESSIONAL: BRAILLE (Pensionable)

The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Professional: Braille in the Department of Student Life and Experience.

The position holder is responsible for providing accessible educational materials for students with visual impairments by transcribing textbooks, course materials, and other documents into Braille. The role involves utilizing Braille translation software and embossing equipment to ensure accurate and timely Braille production.

Duties: a. Assist in the transcription of student course materials and handouts into braille, source braille textbooks, and any other educational resources needed for students with visual impairments. b. Assist in the creation of accessible braille material for students with visual impairment. c. Ensure Braille resources and materials are used in accordance with accessibility standards and regulations. d. Assist in the conversion of electronic documents (e.g., PDFs, Word documents) into accessible formats, including Braille or electronic text compatible with screen readers, e. Assist with the identification and sourcing of braille technology and equipment and ensure that it is suitable for students use. f. Maintain braille equipment to ensure that they stay in good condition. g. Contribute to the development of and implement departmental, sectional and unit level strategies, policies, plans and procedures. h. Participate in the identification and mitigation of operational risks. i. Comply with relevant regulations and legislation. j. Actively engage with the professional community to support and develop expertise in an area of profession. k. Undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor in line with their role. 

Qualification Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field with specialty in one or more areas of different ability is required.

Experience Requirements: No prior work experience is required.

Other Requirements: a. Basic knowledge of Braille transcription and Braille translation software. b. Familiarity with assistive technology and accessibility standards. c. Strong organizational and communication skills. d. Compassion, patience, and a commitment to supporting individuals with visual impairments.
