Applications are invited for a position of Teaching Assistant specialising in Ceramics in the Department of Industrial Design and Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

Duties: The successful candidate will be required to assist in the teaching of courses in the Bachelor of Design & Technology Education and Bachelor of Industrial Design programmes. The Teaching Assistant will primarily (i) instruct and demonstrate the practical aspects of Ceramics courses, (ii) mark students’ scripts and reports, (iii) perform any responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of Department. Responsibilities will include guiding students on working with clay, hand building (e.g., coil and slab processes, mould making) and other forming techniques, decorative processes, and achieving proficiency in inventive ceramic techniques. Management and maintenance of the ceramics studio and equipment may also be required.

Requirements: Applicants must possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Design & Technology, Industrial Design, and/or any related field. Work experience, proficiency in a range of ceramic hand building and decorative techniques, knowledge of clay processes, kiln firing processes, and an understanding of both historical and contemporary ceramic design principles will be an added advantage. Experience in guiding students on product refinement and the production aspects of ceramics, as well as university level demonstration/teaching assistant experience, will also be beneficial.
