MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST/TECHNICIAN - HAEMATOLOGY AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION

Main purpose of the job: To prepare equipment and reagents for laboratory classes, ensure that the laboratory equipment is in working order, manage laboratory practicals, demonstrate techniques and maintain inventory of stocks and equipment loans issued from assigned laboratory.

Duties: The successful applicants will be expected to:  (i) prepare the laboratory for postgraduate and undergraduate practical sessions;  (ii) demonstrate clinical laboratory science skills to students;  (iii) maintain acceptable safety standards in the laboratories and associated working areas; (iv) maintain laboratory equipment inventory and assist in the purchase of laboratory equipment and consumables; (v) provide technical assistance in teaching and research and any other duties assigned by the Head of Department/Lecturer. (vi) Required to handle human biological specimens; (vii) perform quality assurance procedures for maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies; (viii) demonstrate the correct use of equipment to students during laboratory sessions; (ix) may be assigned to supervise Technical staff below the Technician level; and (x) report to the Senior Technician.

Key performance areas: Quality of preparation and setup of laboratories for students; and Good technical skills in medical laboratory sciences.

Requirements: Candidates should have: (i) a Diploma or Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences: (ii) at least 3 years working experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory techniques; (iii) registered with Botswana Health Professions Council as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technician; (iv) good technical and communication skills.
