VACANCY NO: IRC 1110 - MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST (HAEMOTOLOGY AND BLOOD TRANSFUTION (1 Year Contract)

The Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of a medical Laboratory Scientist – Haematology and Blood Transfusion in the School of Allied Health Professions.

Main purpose of the job

To prepare equipment, reagents and clinical material for laboratory classes, ensure that the laboratory equipment is in working order, manage laboratory practicals, demonstrate techniques and maintain inventory of stocks and equipment.

Duties:

  • Prepares the laboratory for postgraduate and undergraduate practical sessions
  • Demonstrates clinical laboratory science skills to students
  • Maintains acceptable safety standards in the laboratories and associated working areas.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment inventory and assist in the purchase of laboratory equipment and consumables.
  • Provides technical assistance in teaching and research and any other duties assigned by the Head of Department/Lecturer/Senior Technician.
  • Required to handle human biological specimens.
  • Performs quality assurance procedures for maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of equipment to students during laboratory sessions.
  • May be assigned to supervise technical staff below the Technician level.
  • The position reports to the Senior Technician.

  • Quality of preparation and setup of laboratories for students.
  • Good technical skills in medical laboratory sciences.
  • Maintain safe laboratory environment. 

Requirements:

  • Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Equivalent
  • At least 2 years working experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion  Laboratory Techniques  
  • Registered with Botswana Health Professions Council as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Good technical and communication skills.
