MANAGER: INDUSTRY LIAISON AND INTERNSHIPS (3 Year Fixed-Term Contract)

The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Manager: Industrial Liaison and Internships in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.

The Manager: Industry Liaison and Internships is responsible for establishing and maintaining strong industry relationships, coordinating student internships, and ensuring that students gain practical experience that enhances their academic learning. The position holder will be expected to develop strategic partnerships, manage student placements and evaluate the effectiveness of internship programmes.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to:

Strategy & Policy: (i) Contribute to the development of University and Faculty strategies, policies, plans and procedures, and lead implementation at a faculty level. (ii) Develop and implement faculty plans in line with the faculty strategy. (iii) Manage the faculty’s operational performance against established goals and objectives identifying areas for improvement and recommending corrective action as needed. (iv) Stay updated with industry trends to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation.

Programme Development and Coordination: (i) Develop and implement internship programmes that align with the faculty's academic objectives and industry standards. (ii) Create policies and procedures for the operation of internship programmes, including placement, supervision, and assessment. (iii) Coordinate with academic departments to ensure internships are integrated into the curriculum effectively. (iv) Serve as the primary liaison between the university, students, and industry partners for all internship-related activities. (v) Facilitate regular communication and feedback among all stakeholders to ensure the effectiveness of internship programmes. (vi) Organize events such as industry panels, networking sessions, and career fairs to enhance engagement and collaboration.

Student Placement, Support and Supervision: (i) Coordinate the placement of students into suitable internship positions, matching student skills and interests with industry needs. (ii) Provide pre-placement orientation and ongoing support to students throughout their internships. (iii) Address and resolve any issues or conflicts that arise during internships. (iv) Monitor and evaluate student performance during internships, gathering feedback from industry supervisors. (v) Liaise with industry supervisors to ensure students are meeting learning outcomes and performance expectations. (vi) Coordinate the assessment of student performance and ensure appropriate academic credit is awarded. (vii) Collect and analyse data on internship programmes to evaluate their impact and effectiveness.

Customer & Stakeholder Experience: (i) Provide excellent customer service ensuring client and stakeholder satisfaction. (ii) Resolve customer enquiries and issues in a timely and efficient manner. (iii) Identify and address areas of improvement for customer and stakeholder experience.

People Management: (i) Provide guidance and mentorship to employees under supervision, ensuring their professional growth and development. (ii) Engage and discipline staff in accordance with defined human resource management policies and procedures and prevailing labour laws.

Financial Management: (i) Assist with the development and management of the faculty’s budget. (ii) Develop and manage unit level budget. (iii) Recommend expenditure in accordance with delegated limits.

Risk Management & Compliance: (i) Develop and manage unit level risk register with clear mitigation strategies. (ii) Support internal and external unit level audits as per the University policy. (iii) Address audit findings and recommendations to improve processes and controls. (iv) Ensure unit compliance to legislative and statutory requirements

The successful candidate will also undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor.

Qualification Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree aligned to disciplines in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment and a Master’s degree in Business, Management or relevant field are required.

Experience Requirements: (i) A minimum of six (6) years' experience, three (3) of which should have been at Senior Professional/officer level. (ii) Higher Education experience is preferred.

Professional registration: Should be a member of a recognized institution or eligible for registration.

Other Requirements: (i) Experience in higher education administration, focusing on internships, industrial liaison, or career services. (ii) Proven track record in developing and managing industry partnerships. (iii) Strong understanding of higher education and industry trends.
