The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Manager: Faculty Shared Facilities and Equipment in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.
The Manager: Faculty Shared Facilities and Equipment will play a key role in the strategic management of diverse resources and equipment within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. Reporting directly to the Executive Dean of Faculty, the position holder will be responsible for optimising the utilisation of services and equipment to support teaching, research and engagement initiatives.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to:
Strategy and Policy – (i) Contribute to University and Faculty strategies, policies, and plans; lead unit-level implementation. (ii) Develop and execute Shared Services and Equipment unit plans aligned with Faculty strategy. (iii) Manage unit performance against goals, identify improvements, and recommend corrective actions. (iv) Monitor trends to drive continuous improvement and innovation.
Resource Optimization – (i) Develop strategies for optimal use of shared resources and equipment with the Chief Technicians. (ii) Align resources with faculty needs through collaboration. (iii) Partner with managers, leaders, and stakeholders to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. (iv) Facilitate cross-disciplinary use of shared services and resources. (v) Identify and procure state-of-the-art technologies and equipment to enhance teaching, research, and engagement capabilities in line with the Faculty's strategy. (vi) Evaluate emerging trends to ensure resources remain cutting-edge and relevant. (vii) Collaborate closely with the Deputy Dean Research, Engagement, and Postgraduate Studies to align shared resources with research and engagement initiatives. (viii) Support technology transfer and collaboration opportunities within shared services.
Revenue Generation – (i) Identify opportunities for revenue generation through the strategic utilization of shared resources, such as offering fee-based services to external stakeholders or partnering with industry for collaborative projects. (ii) Develop and implement pricing strategies, fee structures and revenue-sharing models to maximize returns while ensuring affordability and accessibility for faculty, staff, and students. (iii) Cultivate relationships with external partners, sponsors, and funding agencies to explore funding opportunities and sponsorships that support shared resource initiatives. (iv) Customer & Stakeholder Experience. (v) Provide excellent customer service ensuring client and stakeholder satisfaction. (vi) Resolve customer enquiries and issues in a timely and efficient manner. (vii) Identify and address areas of improvement for customer and stakeholder experience.
People Management – (i) Provide guidance and mentorship to employees under supervision, ensuring their professional growth and development. (ii) Engage and discipline staff in accordance with defined human resource management policies and procedures and prevailing labour laws.
Financial Management – (i) Assist with the development and management of the faculty’s budget. (ii) Develop and manage unit level budget. (iii) Recommend expenditure in accordance with delegated limits.
Risk Management & Compliance – (i) Develop and manage Faculty Shared Services and Equipment risk register with clear mitigation strategies. (ii) Support internal and external unit level audits as per the University policy. (iii) Address audit findings and recommendations to improve processes and controls. (iv) Ensure unit compliance to legislative and statutory requirements.
The successful candidate will also undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor.
Qualification Requirements: Applicants should have: (i) A Bachelor’s degree (aligned to disciplines in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment) and a Master’s degree in Business, Management or relevant field are required.
Experience Requirements: (i) A minimum of six (6) years' experience, three (3) of which should have been at senior professional level. (ii) Higher Education experience is preferred.
Professional registration: Should be a member of a recognized institution or eligible for registration.
Other Requirements: (i) Several years of experience in facilities management, equipment coordination, or shared services administration - preferably in an academic or research environment. (ii) Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple projects, stakeholders and resources effectively. (iii) Knowledge of equipment maintenance procedures, safety regulations and technical support services relevant to academic and research settings. (iv) Experience with budget management, financial analysis and resource planning in a complex institutional environment.
