MANAGER: EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION, WELLNESS AND BENEFITS

The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Manager: Employee Compensation, Wellness and Benefits in the Department of Human Resources. 

The Manager: Employee Compensation, Wellness and Benefits will be responsible for the development, management, monitoring and lead the implementation of the University's wellness and benefits programs, including employee compensation packages, insurance procurement and compliance, communication and education to employees. The position holder collaborates with employees, management and external stakeholders and service providers to maintain a supportive and healthy working environment for employees consistent with the overall University's mission, goals and objectives. 

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Policy:  The successful candidate will be expected to i) Contribute to the development of University and departmental strategies, policies, plans and procedures, and lead implementation at a unit level ii) Develop and implement the Employee Compensation, Wellness and Benefits plans in line with the departmental strategy iii) Manage the Employee Compensation, Wellness and Benefits’ operational performance against established goals and objectives identifying areas for improvement and recommending corrective action as needed iv) Stay updated with key trends to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. 

Employee Benefits Administration: i) Review, evaluate and supervise employee benefits and incentive programs ii) Liaise with service providers to develop and maintain compensation and benefits plans iii) Conduct Review benefits, prepare reports, and negotiate improved plans and contracts iv) Monitor programme effectiveness and implement process improvements v) Coordinate employee wellness, retirement awareness, and training initiatives. Vi) Develop and monitor service agreements to ensure compliance and effective implementation vii) Develop and coordinate employee rehabilitation programmes viii) Provide support during bereavement, illness, and other employee welfare matters. 

Compensation and Rewards Management:  i) Conduct market benchmarking and salary surveys to ensure competitive and equitable pay ii) Participate in salary surveys and monitor pay equity to ensure employees are placed within appropriate salary ranges and market pay disparities remain acceptable. iii) Provide compensation advice, training, and policy guidance to HR and stakeholders iv) Advise HR Client Services and Organisational Development on compensation management, job classification, and related HR matters v) Evaluate the effectiveness of the University's compensation practices through internal and external research of performance benchmarks and critical indicators such as turnover statistics, recruitment success studies, equity studies, and salary range variance analyses vi) Review, develop and manage  University’s staff  pay plan/compensation strategies to ensure internal equity and market competitiveness vii) Oversee the maintenance and integrity of compensation databases and the job description on the University web site vi) Collaborate with HR systems analysts to resolve system issues and recommend enhancements viii) Advise and train HR team and client management on policy, procedure, systems, and best practices, and performs operational reviews and audits ix) Support the planning, administration, and reporting of the annual staff salary review process. 

Wellness and Engagement: i) Develop and implement employee wellness and engagement programs that promote physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing, ii) Collaborate with departments and faculties to deliver wellness initiatives that enhance employee wellbeing and organisational performance, iii) Manage, monitor, and evaluate health, wellness, and engagement programmes to maximise participation and impact, iv) Develop and lead implementation of absence management policies, strategies and employee return to work plans, v)  Collaborate with internal counselling services to identify and address perpetual absenteeism and promote wellbeing. 

Monitoring and Reporting:   i) Analyse employee feedback to identify trends and improve wellness programs, ii) Monitor and recommend improvements to wellness, compensation, and benefits programs, iii) Collaborate with relevant departments to ensure compliance with occupational health regulations and develop wellness initiatives for employees in hazardous work environments. 

Customer and Stakeholder Experience: i) Provide excellent customer service ensuring client and stakeholder satisfaction, ii) Establish and maintain effective stakeholder relationships to support departmental objectives, iii) Resolve customer enquiries and issues promptly and efficiently, iv) Enhance customer and stakeholder experience through continuous improvement   

Risk Management and Compliance: (i) Develop and manage the Employee Compensation, Wellness and Benefits risk register with mitigation measures, ii) Support internal and external audits and implement audit recommendations, iii) Ensure compliance with legislative, statutory and University requirements. 

People Management:  i) Participate in recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse team, ii) Support staff development through mentoring, training, and career growth opportunities, iii) Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to drive continuous improvement, iv) Manage staff performance and disciplinary matters in line with HR policies and labour laws. 

Financial Management: i) Assist with the development and management of the departmental budget ii) Develop and manage Employee Compensation, Wellness and Benefits budget iii) Recommend expenditure in accordance with delegated limits. 

Qualifications Requirements: Applicants should possess a minimum of a Master's degree in Human Resources or related qualification. 

Minimum Experience: i) A minimum of six (6) years experience, three (3) of which should have been at Senior Professional level ii) Higher Education experience is an added advantage iii) A member of an international or local equivalent Human Resources/ Employee Wellness body if required. 

Other Requirements:  i) Proven experience in benefits administration, wellness program management, or a related HR role, ii) Strong knowledge of employee benefits, healthcare regulations, and wellness trends.
