MANAGER: ACADEMIC STAFF DEVELOPMENT (1 Post)

The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, innovation, and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Manager: Academic Staff Development in the Centre for Learning and Teaching Innovation.

The Manager: Academic Staff Development is responsible for promoting the professional development of academic staff of the University to improve overall academic effectiveness and student learning in all settings. The position holder will establish a policy framework for academic excellence in teaching while building capacity for career growth.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Policy: (i) Contribute to the development and implementation of centre’s strategies, policies and staff development initiatives; (ii) Manage unit performance against objectives, drive continuous improvement through corrective actions, and (iii) monitor emerging trends to foster innovation and enhance operational effectiveness. (iv) Develop and implement Academic Staff Development plans, programs and initiatives in line with the centre’s strategy.

Professional Development Programs: (i) Develop and implement academic staff development, induction and training frameworks that enhance teaching excellence and professional growth of academic staff. (ii) Design and facilitate professional development programs to improve teaching excellence, learning outcomes, and academic performance. (iv) Conduct workshops and seminars to enhance teaching skills for all staff, improving knowledge and competencies in teaching in higher education. (v) Lead research initiatives in learning and teaching to advance the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Teaching Support: (i)Advocate for teaching innovation and faculty development across the university. (ii) Align staff development initiatives with institutional teaching and learning strategies. (iii) Identify faculty development needs and design relevant programs in collaboration with academic stakeholders. (iv) Advise faculty on effective teaching practices, learner-centred approaches, assessment, and classroom management. (v) Provide coaching and mentorship to support professional growth and teaching excellence. (vi) Develop and maintain teaching and learning resources. (vii) Offer consultation and guidance on teaching and learning development. (viii) Foster multidisciplinary collaboration and the sharing of innovative teaching practices.

Customer and Stakeholder Experience: (i) Provide excellent customer service to ensure client and stakeholder satisfaction. (ii)Resolve customer enquiries and issues promptly and efficiently. (ii) Continuously improve customer and stakeholder experience.

People Management: (i) Provide guidance and mentorship to employees under supervision, ensuring their professional growth and development. (ii) Engage and discipline staff in accordance with defined human resource management policies and procedures and prevailing labour laws.

Financial Management: (i) Assist in developing and managing departmental and unit budgets. (ii) Recommend expenditures in line with delegated authority limits.

Risk Management and Compliance: (i) Develop and maintain the Academic Staff Development risk register, including mitigation measures. (ii) Support internal and external audits in line with University policy. (iii) Implement audit recommendations to strengthen processes and controls. (iv) Ensure compliance with all legislative and statutory requirements.

Job Requirements

Qualifications Requirements: A PhD/Doctorate in Education, Curriculum Development, Teacher Education, or a relevant field is required.

Minimum Experience: (i) A minimum of six (6) years’ experience in higher education contexts, three (3) of which should have been at senior professional/ officer level (ii) Evidence of research done in teaching and learning.

Professional Certification: (i) University teaching certificates, project management, strategic management etc, certifications. (ii) be a Member of a recognised professional body or registration with relevant regulatory body (BQA among them).

Other Requirements: (i) Proficiency in using learning management systems (LMS) and other educational technologies. (ii) Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. (ii) Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and foster a supportive learning environment. (iii) Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
