MANAGER – GRANTS (2-YEAR CONTRACT)

VACANCY NO: FM/RGS01/2023

Duties: the successful candidate will be expected to: i) provide senior-level oversight of grants management of various internally and externally funded consultancies, projects and studies undertaken in the Faculty of Medicine; ii) coordinate and support grant implementation processes, throughout the grants life cycle, as required;  iii) supervise research office administrative support staff; and iv) provide compliance-oriented, grants management guidance to department level support staff involved with grant implementation.

This post will report to the Deputy Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, Faculty of Medicine, University of Botswana.

Specific Responsibilities: i) ensure that there is compliance to funding agency rules and regulations; ii) demonstrate understanding of funding agency rules in the management of funded projects; iii) prepare and/or review budgets for proposed or existing projects; iv) contribute to and lead in grant preparation (especially budget and budget justification); v) predict expenditure and provide principal investigator(s) with forecasts; vi)  monitor grant budget spending to ensure appropriate spend rate; vii) prepare reports as required by funding agencies and internal stakeholders; viii) facilitate and participate in required funding agency reporting; ix) prioritise work based on deadlines, including working with sub-awardees (if University of Botswana is prime) or Prime (if University of Botswana is a sub-awardee); x) supervise and mentor research office support staff; xi) carry out other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:  i) first degree in Finance or equivalent; ii) at least 5 years experience coordinating business processes of research, including pre-award and post-award, and engagement with funders and other stakeholders; iii) at least 2 years experience as a supervisor.

Attributes and skills required: i) budgeting and accounting experience skills; ii) excellent communication and organisational skills; iii) strong leadership qualities, sound analytical and coordinating skills; iv) ability to work and collaborate well with team members from multiple disciplines and multiple institutions; v) knowledge of donor agencies; vi) strong English writing skills and use of Excel.
