The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Lifeguard in the Department of Student Life and Experience.
The Lifeguard is responsible for overseeing swimming activities at aquatic Centres by ensuring compliance and implementation of rules, regulations and policies to ensure the safety of patrons.
Duties: The successful candidate will: i. Implement diverse range of pool recreational programs, including intramural sports, fitness classes, and university sports clubs; ii. Ensure that programs cater to the interests and needs of the student population; iii. Supervise swimming activities by ensuring that policies, guidelines and safety procedures are followed; iv. Rescue patrons in the event of injuries, swimmers in distress or danger of drowning and administer CPR or First Aid where necessary and reports accordingly; vi. Participate and assist organize in fundraising activities; vii. Inspect aquatic centre, equipment and water to ensure cleanliness, safety, and accessibility; viii. Manage the equipment and report any defects to the supervisor; ix. Manage and keep inventory of swimming pool chemicals and materials; x. Ensure the pool surroundings are clean and safe; xi. enforce all the University of Botswana safety rules and regulations in and around the swimming pool; xii. Undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor in line with their role.
The candidates must be prepared to work flexible hours, during weekends or holidays as is necessary.
Requirements: Candidates should possess: (i) At minimum a BGSE/IGSE certificate or equivalent. (ii) A minimum of two (2) years Lifeguarding experience (iii) Valid Life -saving certificate that includes CPR techniques and First Aid techniques or Level 1 Swimming - Coaching certificate or Scuba Diving Certificate. (iv) Excellent physical fitness. (v) Experience in performing the different life- saving techniques and swimming strokes. (vi) Be at least 18 years of age and above (vii) Be a Member of the Lifesaving Botswana and/or South African body.
Other Requirements: a Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. b. Knowledge of sports facility management, program development, and stakeholder engagement strategies. c. Strong swimming skills, vigilance and physical fitness
