The University of Botswana (UB), a premier state-owned tertiary institution dedicated to shaping the future through excellence, research, innovation and meaningful societal impact, invites applications from accomplished and suitably qualified professionals for the position of Lecturer in Communication and Literacy Skills in the Department of Academic Language and Literacy Skills under the School of Languages, Communication and Literary Studies.
The Lecturer in Communication and Literacy Skills is responsible for undertaking independent teaching and research in the Communication and Literacy Skills discipline or related areas and make independent contributions to professional practice and/or expertise. The incumbent will also coordinate or lead the related activities as appropriate to the discipline and undertake administrative activities of the Institution.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to; (i) Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in Communication and Academic Literacy Skills to students in any of the following specialisations: Humanities, Business, Science, Education, Engineering and Technology, Health Sciences and Social Sciences; (ii) Conduct research in relevant areas and take an active part in the supervision and assessment of undergraduate and graduate students’ research projects; (iii) Develop, update, and deliver undergraduate and possibly some graduate courses; (iv) Serve on committees within the University and external professional organisations; (v) Design and administer assessments that accurately measure student learning outcomes; (vi) Present scholarly articles at national and international seminars and conferences; (vii) Develop portfolio of creative and professional work and participate in competitions to showcase contribution; (viii) Participate in external research in efforts to boost the standing of the university/ institute as required; (ix) Assist with organizing faculty/ university symposium and conferences of national importance; (x) Participate in the identification and mitigation of operational risks; (xi) Collaborate with relevant internal and external stakeholders as needed to effectively deliver duties as defined; (xii) Facilitate research capability development at community level; (xiii) Carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of School or the Chairperson of the Department.
Requirements: Applicants should have a PhD in any of the following (i) Language and Academic Literacy Studies, Applied Linguistics, Communication in Languages, Language and literacy Education, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for Academic Purposes or related fields (ii) a Masters’ degree and a Bachelor’s degree in the same or related fields and (iii) evidence of scholarship in the same or related fields. Evidence of governance and social engagement as well as a minimum of two years teaching experience at a University or comparable institution will be added advantages.
N.B. Citizens with a Master’s degree and evidence of pursuing a PhD qualification in any of the following: Language and Academic Literacy Studies, Applied Linguistics, Communication in Languages, Language and literacy Education, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for Academic Purposes or related fields (ii) a Bachelor’s degree in the same or related fields, with at least 2(i) pass/GPA of at least 3.6 or equivalent may be considered under special circumstances.
