CHINESE STUDIES PROGRAMME

VACANCY NO: FH/CHN 2/2020 - LECTURER (2 positions), FIXED - TERM CONTRACTS

The Chinese Studies Programme in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Botswana (UB) aims to produce graduates with a high level of proficiency in Mandarin Chinese who are able to work in academic, public and private positions where extensive and expert knowledge of China is required. The Programme is currently seeking to recruit two (2) lecturers.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach Mandarin Chinese at all levels and courses on Chinese society and culture (taught in English) for the Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies Programme; (ii) undertake individual research or in collaboration with colleagues within or outside the Programme; (iii) contribute positively to the governance of the University, the professional development of the discipline and engagement of the community at local, national and international levels; and (iv) carry out any other duties that may be assigned by the Programme Coordinator and Chair.

Requirements: Candidates should: (i) have a Doctorate in Chinese Studies, Teaching Mandarin Chinese as a Second/ Foreign Language or other relevant field; (ii) have native or near native fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese; (iii) have native or near native fluency in spoken and written English; and (iv) show evidence of prior engagement in research. The following will be added advantages: (i) attainment of Level 5 or 6 in the Hanyu shuiping kaoshi (HSK) proficiency exam (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese); (ii) attainment of Advanced Level in the HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese); (iii) Evidence of governance and social engagement; and (iv) teaching experience at a University or comparable institution.

N.B. Relevant Master’s Degree or equivalent may be considered provided that the applicant has a relevant Bachelor’s Degree with at least a 2(i) pass or equivalent.
