LECTURER IN CHINESE STUDIES - VACANCY NO: FH/CS01/2023 (2 Year Contract) (Re-advert)
The Chinese Studies Programme in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Botswana aims to produce graduates who are both competent in Mandarin Chinese and able to work in academic, public and private positions where extensive and expert knowledge of China is required. The programme is currently seeking to recruit one (1) Lecturer in Chinese Studies.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to (i) teach undergraduate level courses in Mandarin Chinese for the Chinese Studies Programme; (ii) teach courses on Chinese society and culture (taught in English) for the Chinese Studies Programme; (iii) supervise undergraduate students’ projects as need may arise; (iii) participate in all academic and professional activities of the department including research; (iv) and carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the Programme Coordinator and Chair.
Requirements: Applicants should possess: (i) a PhD in Chinese Studies or related field; (ii) a Master’s degree in Chinese Studies or related field; (iii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Studies or related field of at least 2(i) pass/GPA of at least 3.6 or equivalent; (iv) show evidence of engagement in research. The following will be added advantages: (i) evidence of governance and social engagement; (ii) teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) attainment of Level 5 or 6 in the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) proficiency Test within the last two years (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese); (iv) Advanced Level in the HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) within the last two years (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese); (v) ability to teach Mandarin Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language or other relevant field; (vi) have native or near native fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese as well as have native or near native fluency in spoken and written English.
N.B. Applicants with Master’s Degree in Chinese Studies or related field with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Studies of at least 2(i) pass/GPA of at least 3.6 or equivalent may be considered under special circumstances.
