Vacancies exist for the positions of heads of department in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Botswana.

The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is establishing an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed Academic Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach which is integrated and community oriented. A number of MMed programs are active.

Head of Department (2 positions)

Candidates are needed in the areas of:

  1. Internal Medicine
  2. Surgery

Duties; The successful candidates will be expected to: (i)Provide overall leadership and coordination of the department for efficient implementation of teaching, research, service provision and patient care (where applicable); (ii) Ensure that courses and services for which the department is responsible are taught or provided as expected through assigning duties and responsibilities to staff in the department; (iii) Be in charge of assessment and evaluation of students and staff academic performance;  (iv) Recommend staff to be recruited into the department to Faculty Appointments, Promotions and Review Committee (FAPRC); (v) Advise the University through FAPRC on the need to recruit special categories of staff on full-time or part-time basis as it relates to needs of the department; (vi) Advice the Dean on issues related to staff development and training; (vii) Ensure that students and staff discipline is maintained as expected of them and reporting any misconduct to the Disciplinary committee; (viii) Facilitate the development and coordination of research activities of department; (ix) Ensure that the Department has adequate learning resources to facilitate teaching of department programs; (x) Responsible for obtaining annual recurrent and development budgets for the Department and monitoring expenditure;  (xi) Any other duty as may be assigned by the Dean and (xii) Act for the Deputy Deans/ Dean as may be required.

Heads of Department report to the Dean

Qualification and Experience; (i) an undergraduate medical degree and a specialist qualification in the relevant specialty of medicine with a minimum of 6 years of post-specialization experience in professional practice in the relevant field. The qualification must be registerable by the BHPC with a specialist status; (ii) Must have been a senior lecturer or higher academic rank in the preceding 12 months prior to appointment; (iii) 1 year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution or HOD is desirable.

Attributes and skills required (1) Excellent communication and organizational skills (2) Strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University (3) Good management, human relations, sound analytical and coordinating skills.

Duration of the contract:  The above positions shall be appointed for three years and maybe re-appointed for a further term of three years on the basis of satisfactory performance.
