HEAD OF SCHOOL

FACULTY OF BUSINESS, ECONOMICS AND LAW

The University of Botswana (UB), a state – owned tertiary education institution, invitessuitably qualified, and experienced candidates for the position of Head of School for the below listed Schools.

  1. School of Accounting, Economics and Finance
  2. School of Marketing, Tourism and Hospitality
  3. School of Management Sciences and Law

Duties: The Head of School will be responsible for fostering a culture of excellence, innovation and collaboration, while ensuring the highest standards of academic quality, student success and faculty development.

STRATEGY AND POLICY 

  1. Contribute to the development of University and Faculty strategies, policies, plans and procedures, and lead implementation at School level.
  2. Manage the School’s operational performance against established goals and objectives identifying areas for improvement and recommending corrective action as needed.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

  1. Promote a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, staff, and students.
  2. Oversee the development, review, and enhancement of academic programmes to ensure alignment with industry standards, accreditation requirements, and student needs.
  3. Foster a supportive environment for research and scholarship, encouraging School to pursue external funding, publish scholarly works, and engage in collaborative research projects.

STUDENT SUCCESS

  1. Champion student success initiatives, including recruitment, retention, and graduation efforts.
  2. Address student concerns and grievances promptly, working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to ensure a positive student experience.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PARTNERSHIPS

  1. Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, including industry partners, government agencies, alumni, and community organizations.
  2. Identify opportunities for collaboration, outreach, and service that benefit both the school and the broader community.

CUSTOMER AND STAKEHOLDER EXPERIENCE

  1. Oversee systems and processes that ensure excellent customer service.
  2.  Resolve customer queries in a timely and efficient manner.
  3. Identify and address areas of improvement for customer and stakeholder experience.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

  1. Participate in recruitment and ensure retention and development of a diverse team.
  2. Support faculty professional development activities, including mentoring, training, and opportunities for advancement.
  3. Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to support continuous improvement to employees under supervision. 
  4. Engage and discipline staff in accordance with defined human resource management policies and procedures.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT 

  1. Contributes to the development and management of the faculty budget.
  2. Develop and manage School budget.
  3. Recommend expenditure in accordance with delegated limits. 

RISK MANAGEMENT AND COMPLIANCE

  1. Develop and manage School risk register with clear mitigation strategies.
  2. Support internal and external unit level audits as per the University policy.
  3. Ensure unit compliance to legislative and statutory requirements.

REQUIREMENTS: Candidate must have: (i) A PhD/Doctorate in relevant discipline is required; (ii) A relevant Master’s degree or Fellowship in area of discipline is mandatory; (iii) Must be at the rank of Associate Professor or higher;  (iv) A minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in teaching, research, and governance and social engagement experience in a higher institution is required; (v) An appropriate professional qualification (where appropriate).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Candidate must: (i) Demonstrated leadership experience in higher education, preferably in an academic administrative role; (ii) Strong understanding of academic programme development, accreditation processes, and quality assurance standards; (iii) Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills; (iv)Proven ability to foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion;  (v) Sound financial management skills and experience in budget planning and resource allocation; (vi) Commitment to shared governance, academic freedom, and ethical conduct; (vii) Visionary leadership with a track record of strategic planning and execution.
