The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Head of School for the below listed Schools.

  1. School of Allied Health Sciences
  2. School of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Science
  3. School of Medicine
  4. School of Nursing
  5. School of Public Health

Duties: The Head of School is responsible for fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration while ensuring the highest standards of academic quality, student success, and faculty development.

  • Strategy and Policy

The Head of School plays a vital role in formulating university and faculty strategies, policies, and procedures, and is responsible for their execution at the school level. Additionally, they monitor operational performance, identify areas for enhancement, and implement necessary corrective measures. 

  • Academic Excellence

Directs the design, assessment, and advancement of academic programs to meet industry standards, accreditation mandates, and student needs. They cultivate academic excellence, innovation, and interdisciplinary teamwork, while driving research and scholarship by securing external grants, publishing academic works, and leading collaborative projects.

  • Student Success

Drives student success by overseeing recruitment, retention, and graduation efforts. S/he champions holistic development of students by promoting experiential learning, internships, and professional development activities. Promptly address student issues and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to guarantee a supportive learning environment.

  • Community Engagement and Partnerships

Builds, manages, and strengthens relationships with external stakeholders —including industry partners, government entities, alumni, and local organizations. Identifies and drives collaborations, outreach, and service initiatives that create mutual value for the school and the broader community. Acts as the chief ambassador for the institution, championing its core mission, values, and societal impact. 

  • Customer and Stakeholder Experience

Oversees systems and processes that ensure excellent customer service, resolves customer queries in a timely and efficient manner and identifies and addresses areas of improvement for customer and stakeholder experience.

  • People Management

Participates in the recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse workforce while championing faculty professional development through targeted mentorship and advancement opportunities. Drive continuous employee improvement through regular performance evaluations, constructive feedback, and policy-aligned staff management and disciplinary procedures. 

  • Financial Management

Direct the strategic planning and oversight of school budgets while contributing to broader faculty financial management and expenditure controls. Oversee school financial operations, optimizing resource distribution and enforcing strict compliance with delegated spending limits.

  • Risk Management and Compliance

Develop and oversee the school's risk register, establishing clear mitigation strategies. Facilitate internal and external school-level audits according to university policy, proactively addressing findings to enhance controls. Additionally, ensure all school operations strictly adhere to legislative and statutory requirements.

Requirements:

  • A PhD/Doctorate in relevant discipline is required OR a Master of Medicine (MMED) degree or Fellowship in relevant discipline is required (School of Medicine).
  • Must be at the rank of Associate Professor or higher
  • A minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in teaching, research, and governance and social engagement experience in a higher institution is required.
  • Registered/registrable with Botswana Health Professions Council or Nursing and Midwifery Council of Botswana.

Other Requirements:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in higher education, preferably in an academic administrative role.
  • Strong understanding of academic programme development, accreditation processes, and quality assurance standards.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proven ability to foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Sound financial management skills and experience in budget planning and resource allocation.
  • Commitment to shared governance, academic freedom, and ethical conduct.
  • Visionary leadership with a track record of strategic planning and execution

Duration of office: The Head of School shall hold the appointment for a period of five years and shall be eligible for reappointment for a further term of five years provided that he/she shall not hold office for a continuous period exceeding ten years.
