FULL PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER IN DEMOGRAPHY/POPULATION STUDIES - DEPARTMENT OF POPULATION STUDIES (Contract Position)

FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES - DEPARTMENT OF POPULATION STUDIES

VACANCY NO: IRC 1069 - FULL PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER IN DEMOGRAPHY/POPULATION STUDIES (Contract Position)

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to (i) teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Demography & Population Studies especially Mathematical Demography, Indirect Demographic Estimation, Demographic Models, Demographic Data Analytics, Population Estimation and Projection Models, and must have a solid background in both substantive and technical demography (ii) supervise undergraduate, Masters and MPhil/PhD research activities (iii) engage in the development of scholarship through independent or joint publications (iv) provide academic leadership in the department (v) provide service to the university and the community and (vi) carryout any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Department.

REQUIREMENTS:

The requirements for appointment at each rank are as follows:

FULL PROFESSOR

Candidates should have: (i) PhD degree in Population Studies/Demography or a related discipline; with specialization in at least one of the following: Mathematical Demography, Indirect Demographic Estimation, Demographic Models, Quantitative Methods in Monitoring and Evaluation; (ii) should have at least nine (9) years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) have a minimum of twenty-four (24)  pieces  of  research  products  (e.g.  articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. Twelve (12) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases.  The  remaining  twelve  (12)  publications  could  be  journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers: (iv) An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality of standing (v) sustained research output: a minimum of 3 peer reviewed publications every four years; (vi) Sustained research activity: on-going externally funded research (e.g. funded/commissioned); (vii) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years; (viii) be lead and/or single author in at least one-quarter of the required journal publications in Population/Demography. There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (ix) publications should be spread internationally across journals: (x) significant research  impact,   including   but   not  limited   to  citations, the h-index, policy applications,  peer  reviews,  publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 3 of the these); (xi) acknowledged by peers as being of national and international research standing (e.g. peer review of new research proposals: reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited notional and international publishers: editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at notional and international/symposia (required in at least 3 of the these): (xii) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xiii) research collaborations with other institutions or organisations; (xiv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xv] external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses internationally. The following will be added advantages: (i) Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate. (ii) Effective and experience in running a program/course, etc.

The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of publications clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers, (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates published. name of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any and number of pages. The work should be categorized info books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and any population and development projects.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Candidates should possess; (i)  PhD degree in Population Studies/Demography or a related discipline; with specialization in at least one of the following: Mathematical Demography, Indirect Demographic Estimation, Demographic Models, Quantitative Methods in Monitoring and Evaluation; (ii) at least 5 years of teaching experience at a University or comparable institution; (iii) have a good and sustained record of research and publications with at least 12 publications, 8 of which should be refereed journal articles; lead and/or single authored in at least 6 refereed journal articles or book chapters; (iv) evidence of service to University, the Profession and the Community; (v) evidence of significant and  effective academic leadership through programme development and research; vi) Evidence of original contribution to the discipline, research and or scholarship, providing leadership in scholarship and or research regionally and  contribution engagement and governance.

The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies, and practical media projects.

SENIOR LECTURER

Candidates should possess: (i) PhD degree in Population Studies/Demography or a related discipline; with specialization in at least one of the following: Mathematical Demography, Indirect Demographic Estimation, Demographic Models, Quantitative Methods in Monitoring and Evaluation;; (ii) at least 3 years of teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 pieces of research products published by recognised publishers, 4 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases; (iv) sustained research output: minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication every two years; (v) scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; (vi) be lead and/or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles; (vii) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (viii) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 1 of the these); (ix) recognized as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers; Editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation as key note speaker at national and/or international conferences (required in at least 1 of the these); (x) Successful supervision/co-supervision of research projects/post-doctoral research fellow; (xi) Evidence of social engagement and governance.  The following will be added advantages: (i) sustained research activity: on-going internally and/or externally supported research; (ii) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; (iii) examiner/moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally; (iv) and, effective and experience in running a programme/course, etc.
