Duties: The successful candidate will be responsible for: (i) Supervision of all Technical staff; (ii) Managing operational performance against established goals and objectives, identifying areas for improvement and recommending corrective action as needed; (iii) Overseeing the provision of teaching support during laboratory sessions, tutorials and practical classes through demonstrations, hands-on assistance for group practical work and tutorials; (iv) Assessing student laboratory reports and providing feedback under the supervision of the course lecturer; (v) Managing the operation and monitor equipment or consumables for experiments, including setting up equipment and laboratory experiments; (vi) Ensuring efficiency and effective use of equipment; (vii) Maintaining an accurate and up to date inventory and/or stock information management system; (viii) Contributing to on-going research activities to support knowledge creation, intellectual property, and commercialization in line with the area of expertise; (ix) Assisting with development of the annual Departmental budget; (x) Purchasing of consumables and equipment; (xi) Carrying out risk assessments for technical activities on a daily basis; (xii) Developing and managing risk register with clear mitigation strategies; (xiii) Implementing safety, health and environmental protocols, ensure compliance with regulations, and conduct regular safety inspections; (xiv) Establishing and maintaining partnerships with relevant internal and external stakeholders to enable effective delivery of the departmental mandate, as necessary; (xv) Resolving customer enquiries and issues in a timely and efficient manner; (xvi) Any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department/Supervisor/Departmental Chairperson in line with the role.
Requirements: Candidates should have: (i) A Masters’ Degree in Biological Sciences or related field; (ii) A Bachelors’ Degree in Biological Sciences may be considered based on the area of specialization; (iii) A minimum of six (6) years’ experience, three (3) of which should have been at a supervisory role (e.g. Senior Technician or equivalent); (iv) Extensive experience in technical operations, equipment maintenance, and facility management within an academic or research environment; (v) Strong leadership and management skills, with demonstrated ability to lead a team and manage complex projects; (vi) Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders; (vii) Knowledge of relevant safety regulations and standards, with a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment; (viii) Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic environment.
