ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR - (STRUCTURAL AND METAMORPHIC GEOLOGY) -DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY (Contract)

VACANCY NO: IRC 1066 - ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR - (STRUCTURAL AND METAMORPHIC GEOLOGY)  (Contract) 

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. The candidate should be able to teach at least three of the following: structural geology, tectonics, metamorphic geology, mineralogy, field and general geology. The successful candidate must also be able to take an active part in the supervision and assessment of undergraduate and graduate research work. The Department reserves the right to allocate other courses in addition to those outlined above. 

Requirements: (i) a relevant bachelor’s degree, plus a relevant master’s degree and Doctorate in structural geology and metamorphic geology or related discipline; (ii) at least SIX years of relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) a minimum of 12 pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. Eight (8)  of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining FOUR publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers; (iv) An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 3 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality of standing; (v) sustained research output: a minimum of 3 peer reviewed publications every four years; (vi) Sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g. funded/commissioned); (vii) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years; (viii) be lead and/or single author in at least one-quarter of the required journal publications in structural/metamorphic Geology. There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (ix) publications should be spread internationally and across journals; (x) significant research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 3 of the these); (xi) acknowledged by peers as being of national and international research standing (e.g. peer review of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international/symposia (required in at least 3 of the these); (xii) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xiii) research collaborations with other institutions or organizations; (xiv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xv) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses internationally. 

The following will be an added advantage:  research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate.

The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of publications clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers, (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates published, name of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any and number of pages. The work should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, and consultancies.
