ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN PAEDIATRICS AND ADOLESCENT HEALTH (CITIZENS ONLY)

VACANCY NO: FM/DPAH01/2022

Duties: the successful candidate will: (i) teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students; (ii) conduct research and/or creative professional works in his/her areas of expertise and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research projects (iii) provide service to the university, profession and community (iv) provide clinical care in affiliated hospitals; and (v) carry out any other duties as assigned by the head of department.

Requirements: (i)  Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery or other recognised Medical doctor qualification (MD); (ii) a specialist qualification in General Paediatrics or Paediatric Sub-Specialty; (iii) the qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iv) evidence of governance and social engagement; (v) at least 6 years of relevant teaching experience at a University or comparable institution; (vi) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publication and experience in supervising students’ research projects; (vii) minimum of 12 pieces of research products (articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings) published by recognised publishers, 6 of the 12 publications must be articles in refereed/accredited journals indexed in internationally recognised indexing databases; (viii) paper/poster presentation at national and/or international conferences, depending on the discipline; (ix) be lead and /or last author in at least two-thirds (4 of the 6) of the refereed journal publications; (x) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (xi) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed in texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 2 of these); (xii) recognised as being of at least national research or effective clinical professional standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/ accredited national and regional publishers, editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field, invitation as keynote speaker at national and international conferences/symposia (required in at least 2 of these); (xiii) research collaboration with other institutions or organisations;  (xiv) active maintenance of a license to practice issued by the relevant professional licensing authority; successful supervision of 2 Masters students or co-supervision of 4 Masters students or supervision of 1 PhD student or co-supervision of 2 PhD students/post-doctoral/clinical research fellow supervision; (xv) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses nationally and/or internationally; (xvi) sustained professional research output; a minimum of 1.5 peer reviewed publications (e.g. journal article, book chapter, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc.) per year or new Creative Professional Work every 2 years in 6 years or since last promotion shall constitute sustained research output; (xvii) the curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of the publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any.  Publications should be categorised into: books, monographs, refereed journals, non-refereed journals, chapters in books, etc.

Attributes and skills required (i) excellent communication and organisational skills; (ii) strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University; (iii) good management, human relations and sound analytical and coordinating skills.

The following will be added advantages: (i) sustained research activity; on-going internally and externally-funded research activity; (ii) research/clinical effectiveness awards and other forms of research recognition; (iii) supervisor of undergraduate and/ or postgraduate scholarly projects.
