ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN EPIDEMIOLOGY/BIOSTATISTICS (1Post)

The University of Botswana (UB), a state – owned tertiary education institution, through the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences seeks to appoint an Associate Professor in Epidemiology/Biostatistics in the School of Public Health.

The position requires a passionate educator and researcher committed to making a meaningful impact within the academic community and beyond.

Duties:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Teaching and Learning: (a) Engage students from diverse backgrounds through innovative teaching methods that cater to all learning abilities; (b) Guide students in acquiring disciplined learning practices and critically engaging with course material; (c) Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary teaching strategies, integrating technology where appropriate; (d) Mentor students in conducting rigorous research and professional practice within the field.

Curriculum Development: (a) Apply principles of program/course design to ensure current and relevant curricula are aligned with local and international standards; (b) Review and update curricula based on engagement with stakeholders and current trends in environmental/public health; (c) Ensure alignment between program outcomes, teaching activities, and assessment methods.

Research and Publications: (a) Lead and manage original research projects focused on addressing critical issues in the discipline; (b) Publish research findings in reputable, peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Scopus/Web of Science indexed journals) and present at international conferences; (c) Secure external funding to enhance research capabilities and elevate the institution’s profile; (d) Collaborate across disciplines and institutions to foster innovative research and solve societal challenges; (e) Successfully supervised a completed graduate thesis (PhD/MPhil/Msc); (f) Evidence of service as an external assessor of promotion applications to professorial cadres in other accredited universities.

Governance and Social Engagement: (a) Engage with the community through outreach and development initiatives, enhancing the university's visibility and impact; (b) Lead initiatives for academic leadership and promote ethical research practices.

Professional Development: (a) Stay updated with advancements in the discipline and enhance personal growth through continuous professional development; (b) Contribute to national and international policy discussions affecting the field of environmental and public health; (c) Developing new programmes in environmental/public health and carrying out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of School.

Requirements:

Educational Qualifications: (i) Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology/Biostatistics; (ii) Master’s Degree in Epidemiology/Biostatistics; (iii) Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics/Mathematics/Public Health or equivalent.

Teaching Experience: At least 6 years of relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution. 

Research and Publications: (i) A minimum of 12 pieces of research products (e.g., articles, book chapters, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognised publishers. Eight (8) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases (SI Web of Science, IBSS, and Scopus); (ii) The remaining 4 publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, etc., published by recognised publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (iii) A minimum of 2 peer-reviewed publications every three years; (iv) Demonstrated success in securing external funding to enhance research capabilities and elevate the institution’s profile; (v) Regular paper/poster presentations at conferences; (vi) Be lead and/or single author in at least one-third of the required journal publications; (vii) Evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (viii) Publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (ix) Recognisable research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions, etc. (required in at least 2 of these); (x) Recognised as being of national but increasingly international research standing (e.g., peer reviewing of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international conferences (required in at least 2 of these); (xi) Evidence of research collaborations with other institutions or organisations; (xii) External examiner for Master's and/or PhD theses nationally and/or internationally; (xiii) Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate.

Evidence of governance and social engagement.: (i) Evidence of governance and social engagement, including participation on university committees and community development initiatives; (ii) Curriculum frameworks and advisory group recommendations (where applicable); (iii) Membership of expert committees/professional bodies or comparable organisations at a national, regional, and international level; (iv) Evidence of professional contribution at a national, regional, and international level.

Professional registration or license requirements

Membership or registration with a relevant and recognised professional body is required (where applicable).
