ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR – PAEDIATRICS AND ADOLESCENT HEALTH

VACANCY NO: IRC 3214

Duties: the successful candidate will: 

  1. Teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students 
  2. Conduct research and/or creative professional works in his/her areas of expertise and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research projects 
  3. Provide service to the university, profession and community 
  4. Provide clinical care in affiliated hospitals and 
  5. Carry out any other duties as assigned by the chairperson of department.

Requirements: 

  1. Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery or other recognized medical qualification (MD) 
  2. A specialist qualification in Paediatrics and Adolescent Health (a paediatric sub-specialty qualification is an advantage)
  3. The qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist/sub-specialist status 
  4. Evidence of governance and social engagement 
  5. Evidence of involvement in curriculum development
  6. Evidence of involvement in academic leadership
  7. Evidence of mentorship of postgraduate research
  8. At least 6 years of relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution 
  9. An excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publication and experience in supervising students’ research projects 
  10. Minimum of 12 research products (articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings) published by recognized publishers, 8 of the 12 publications must be articles in accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases 
  11. Paper/poster presentation at national and/or international conferences, depending on the discipline 
  12. Sustained research output of a minimum of 2 peer reviewed publications (e.g. journal article, book chapter, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc) every three years
  13. Be lead and/or last author in at least a-third (4) of the refereed journal publications
  14. Publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals 
  15. Sustained research activity like ongoing externally supported research
  16. Demonstrate some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed in texts in other institutions, etc (required in at least 2 of these) 
  17. Recognized as being of at least national research or effective clinical professional standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers, editorial board member of at least national publisher in a relevant field, invitation as keynote speaker at national and international conferences/symposia etc; 
  18. Evidence of social (community) engagement
  19. Active maintenance of a license to practice issued by the relevant professional licensing authority
  20. Successful supervision of 2 Masters students or co-supervision of 4 Masters students or supervision of 1 PhD student or co-supervision of 2 PhD students/post-doctoral/clinical research fellow supervision; 
  21. External examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses nationally and/or internationally; 
  22. The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of the publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any. Publications should be categorized into books, monographs, refereed journals, non-refereed journals, chapters in books, etc.

  3. Good management, human relations and sound analytical and coordinating skills.
