ASSISTANT PROGRAMME DIRECTOR

A vacancy exists for the position of Assistant Programme Director in Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Botswana.

The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is establishing an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed Academic Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach which is integrated and community oriented. A number of MMed programs are active.

Duties: (1) Assist the Head of the Department (HOD) in implementing the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students in teaching hospital as well as the National Health Laboratory. (2) Provide diagnostic support and teaching in the area of specialty (3) Assist the Head of Department in academic staff recruitment (4) Work with the Deputy Dean – Research & Graduate Studies of the Faculty of Medicine, hospital (Ministry of Health) staff, Head of Department and Hospital Superintendent to set priorities in education, recruitment and infrastructure enhancement (5) Assist the HOD to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of academic programmes. (6) Act for the HOD as may be required (7) Any other duty as may be assigned by the HOD.

Requirements: (1) An undergraduate medical degree and a specialist qualification in Anaesthesia with a minimum of 5 years of post-specialization experience in professional practice in the relevant field. The qualification must be registerable by the BHPC with a specialist status (2) Must have significant experience organising training for Registrars/Residents in anaesthesia prior to appointment (3) At least 1 year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution or HOD is desirable.
