Professor Ethelbert Emmanuel Kari teaches linguistics in the Department of African Languages and Literature, University of Botswana. He has many years of experience in teaching and research on African languages and linguistics and has published many high-quality academic books, journal articles, book chapters and manuals which deal with various aspects of African languages and linguistics.
Professor Kari holds a PhD in Linguistics from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and MA Linguistics and African Languages and BA Linguistics degrees from the University of Port Harcourt. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of Studies in Linguistics and Marang: Journal of Language and Literature, Associate Editor of Kiabara: Journal of Humanities, and Linguistic Editor of Rivers State Readers’ Project. He is also a member of the Linguistic Association of Nigeria, Linguistics Association of Southern African Development Community [SADC] Universities, and African Languages Association of Southern Africa.
His teaching areas are mainly but not limited to morphology, African linguistics, linguistic typology, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, lexicography, and sociolinguistics.
His research interests are mainly in but not limited to morphology, clitics and clitic phenomena, phonology-morphology-syntax interface, serial verb constructions, cognate object constructions, nominal and verbal extensions, African linguistics, Degema linguistics, language description and documentation, lexicography, linguistic typology, sociolinguistics, and comparative grammar.
His postgraduate supervision areas are but not limited to morphology, clitics and clitic phenomena, phonology-morphology-syntax interface, language description and documentation, lexicography, linguistic typology, and sociolinguistics.
