The University of Botswana is today (November 1, 2019) honoured to host the inauguration and swearing in of the fifth President of the Republic of Botswana, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi.
This is a first for the University as this is the first ceremony to be held outside Parliament precincts, save for the one which was held at the National Stadium in 1966.
Another first also is that President Masisi is a University of Botswana alumnus and he will be sworn in by another alumnus, Chief Justice, Justice Terence Rannowane.
President Masisi trained as a teacher after attaining a Diploma in Secondary Education majoring in English and History at the University of Botswana.
Last year, the University also conferred him a Doctor of Laws Honorary Doctorate. He becomes the 16th person to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Botswana since its establishment in 1982.
As for Justice Rannowane, he was appointed Chief Justice in May last year and holds a Law Degree (LLB) from the University of Botswana obtained in 1990. The is the first time Justice Rannowane is conducting a swearing in of a president.
