The need for adults to acquire new knowledge, skills and attitudes is increasingly recognised as essential to economic, social and individual development. The International Commission on Education for the Twenty First Century stated: 'The concept of learning throughout life is the key that gives access to the Twenty First century.' This idea is embedded in Botswana's Vision 2016, which emphasises 'an educated and informed nation'. The Department of Adult Education is dedicated to developing the capacity to meet the goal of lifelong education for all in Botswana, Africa and the world.

The Department of Adult Education is one of the nine departments in the Faculty of Education. It was created in 1991 when the former Institute for Adult Education was divided into two parts, the Centre for Continuing Education and the Department of Adult Education. It is a centre for the study of adult education as an academic discipline dedicated to strengthening the performance of individuals and organisations engaged in a wide range of adult education and lifelong learning programmes.
