The science we practice is our absolute pride, and so is our profession!

Pathology is a bridge between basic sciences and clinical medicine and takes a leading role in diagnostic laboratory services. Pathology practice is about identification of the causes, mechanisms, effects, complications of disease. The science we practice in the Pathology profession allows us to see patients through their specimens and answer their most difficult questions. Pathology plays very important role in unmasking cancers; therefore plays a pivotal role  in treatment decisions for each patient.  A Pathologist is more than a specialized clinician, we believe that a pathologist is an advocate for excellent health care, a teacher, a researcher, a scholar and a good citizen of humanity.

The Department of Pathology boasts of a very skilled and highly qualified team of faculty, residents and research fellows whose mission is to bridge the gap between delivery of excellent diagnostic services while teaching and researching current trends; the very mandate of the University of Botswana. Together with the Ministry of Health, Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital, National Health Laboratory we provide clinical and diagnostic laboratory services in Anatomic Pathology including Clinical autopsy services. Departmental research is driven by recognition of the importance of research-based solutions in our setting, unmatched scholarly experience and staff development. Currently, departmental research strength include HIV associated malignancies; Lymphoma, Breast and Cervical cancers.

The Department of Pathology came into existence in 2013 when the door opened for its first postgraduate program, Master of Medicine in Anatomic Pathology. Another door has just opened for Clinical Pathology. We offer outstanding teaching programs with the support of the following international training partners;

  • University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • University of Pennsylvania in the United States of America.
  • Rutgers University in the United States of America.
  • Nuvance Health/University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine Global Health Program.

This is achieved through visiting faculty and residents’ exchange/ visiting programs and it underscores our team approach to optimizing opportunities for a world class learning experience. Pathology graduates successfully secure excellent fellowships and job placements in both the public and private health sectors.  Anatomic and Clinical Pathology remain a critical and rare skill in Botswana. At the moment, there are less than 10 Pathologists in the country, for a population of 2.5 million.

As a reflection of the true and unbeatable success of the University of Botswana as a whole and in the region, the department attracts strong candidates and researchers locally, regionally and internationally!
