African Languages and Literature

The Department of African Languages and Literature (ALL) at the University of Botswana has been in existence since 1971.  It has grown over the years to gain recognition both regionally and internationally.  In addition to offering language courses, the department is also committed to documenting African languages, teaching proficiency in the major languages of Africa, promoting creativity and dissemination of knowledge through oral and written literature and informing the large community through popular literature and drama. It is equally concerned with the fulfilment of the challenges which face the nation and communities, especially with regard to linguistic diversity, teaching local languages, documenting endangered languages, use of indigenous knowledge and tapping on cultural ecology. Graduates from the Department are usually absorbed in many government and private departments and offices, particularly in teaching, curriculum development, translation, interpretation, editing, research work, public relations, local government, tourism, international affairs and many other places.
