ASSISTANT PROGRAMME DIRECTOR (CONTRACT POSITION)

The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is affiliated to an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed, the Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach, which is integrated and community oriented. The Faculty of Medicine runs a number of Masters of Medicine (MMed) (residency) programmes.

Duties: the successful applicant will be required to; (i) assist the Head of the Department (HOD) in implementing the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students and of medical interns, junior doctors and other members of the clinical care team in the clinical teaching facilities; (ii) provide patient care and training in the area of Paediatrics and Adolescent Health; (iii) participate in relevant research;  (iv) work with the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, health facilities clinical staff (Ministry of Health), HOD and hospital leadership to set priorities in education, research, service, recruitment and infrastructure enhancement; (v) assist the HOD to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of academic programmes; (vi) act for the HOD as may be required and perform any other duties as may be assigned by the HOD.

Requirements: applicant should have; (i) at least a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery or other recognised medical qualification (MD); (ii) a specialist qualification in General Paediatrics or relevant Paediatric sub-speciality with a minimum of 5 years of post-specialisation experience in professional practice.  Candidates with less than 5 years post-specialisation experience may be considered under special circumstances. The qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iii) must have been a Lecturer (preferably Senior Lecturer) in the preceding 12 months prior to appointment; (iv) at least 1 year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution.

Attributes and skills required: (i) excellent communication and organisational skills; (ii) strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University; (iii) good management, human relations, sound analytical and coordinating skills. 

Duration of the contract: the above position is available for a restricted-term contract of three years and may be renewed for a further term of three years on the basis of satisfactory performance.
