Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships in the Department of Biological Sciences as part of the Collaborative African Genomics Network (CAfGEN) that has recently received an NIH-Wellcome Trust Funded Grant (H3Africa NiH-U54AI110398) to the tune of USD $5 million.
CAfGEN is a collaborative Network that consists of 6 institutions: University of Botswana, Baylor-Botswana Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence, University of Makerere, Baylor-Uganda Children’s Foundation, Baylor Swaziland Children’s Foundation and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). The role of the Network is in line with the H3Africa mandate which is to capacitate African Scientists in the study of genetics and genomics. Currently the network has received funding to study the “Host Genetic Factors Influencing HIV Disease progression in African Paediatric HIIV.
The candidates will receive well rounded-training at BCM, Texas and UB. The candidates will be trained on genetic and bioinformatics tools to address the CAfGEN aims as well as the PhD research which will be within the CAfGEN umbrella. The candidates will also receive training in course-work related to the field of study at BCM.
The scholarship will include full tuition at the University of Botswana as well as a stipend for a period of 3 years. The chosen candidates will leave for 2 years training in Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, USA in July 2018 and will receive further training at UB in the remaining years of PhD.
