DEVELOPING A RESEARCH AGENDA ON BOTSWANA-AFRICA-CHINA ISSUES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA

The Africa-China relations Workshop was held at UB on 18 and 19 April 2013. The purpose of the workshop was to explore ways of promoting Africa-China related research at UB. This was prompted by the realization that whilst China has become a critical player in the African socio-economic scene, a lot of the research on Africa-China relationship emanated from researchers outside of Africa. It was felt that the time has come for research conducted by Africans and influenced by the realities on the ground rather than others’ perceptions. The workshop was attended by 50 participants who included UB staff members, representatives of Botswana Government, members of civil society organizations and the private sector, and representatives of the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese community. The Director of the Centre for Chinese Studies at the University of Stellenbosch came from South Africa to give the keynote address. The workshop included formal presentations, an interactive panel session and group discussions as well as plenary sections. The outcome of the workshop has been the formalization of an Africa China Research Group at UB, and an identification of research areas that should be embarked on – colleagues in the group are already working on these areas.
