UB Community mourns the death of Chancellor

The University of Botswana staff and students are mourning the death of their Chancellor and Botswana’s second President. Sir Ketumile Masire. He passed away  last night - June 22, 2017 - in Gaborone.
 
Sir Ketumile became the first chancellor of the University of Botswana in 1982 during his tenure as state president, until 1998 when he retired from the presidency and passed the baton to former President Mr Festus Mogae. He then made history when he was appointed the third Chancellor in September 2008, and the first non-head of state to hold such a position.
 
According to a statement from the Sir Ketumile Foundation, Sir Ketumile died peacefully at Bokamoso Private Hospital at 10:10 pm in the company of his family.
 
The President, Lt. General Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, has also sent his condolences on behalf of the people of Botswana. Among others, the message informs the nation that a three day period of mourning, will run through to June 25, 2017, during which flags shall fly at half-mast.
 
The message continues: “In this time of reflection, members of the public may continue to engage in public and private activities, but in so doing are reminded to be mindful of the need to display behaviour that shows appropriate respect for the occasion.”
