UB Promotes Three Lecturers

The University of Botswana has recently promoted Mr Brothers Malema and Dr Mphemelang Joseph Ketlhoilwe to the ranks of Senior lecturer in Departments of Economics and Languages and Social Sciences respectively, and Njoku Ola Ama to Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics.

Brothers W. Malema holds a BA in Economics and Demography from the University of Botswana and an MA in Economics from the University of Boston in the United States of America. He has taught Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Environmental Economics, Development Economics and Mathematical Economics at undergraduate level. He has also supervised a number of undergraduate projects for single major economics students. Malema has published in the areas of Poverty, Foreign Direct Investment, Productivity, Costs of Tertiary education, informal sector and extensively in a wide range of HIV/AIDS related issues in refereed journals.

He is currently co-authoring papers on the impact of the Global Financial Crisis on the Botswana economy and economic diversification. He has refereed for some international journals and has been a consultant in the area of Health Economics. Malema’s views have often been solicited by both the Botswana print and broadcast media on issues of national interest.

Dr Ketlhoilwe holds a PhD (Rhodes University)-2007 MSc (Environmental Studies) (Strathclyde University) - 1996; Diploma in Personnel and Industrial Relations (London) - 1992; Post Graduate Diploma in Education (UB) -1987 and a BA (Humanities) (UB) – 1986. Before joining the University of Botswana in 1999, Dr. Ketlhoilwe was an Environmental Education and Curriculum Development Officer in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development.

He has served the Department of Languages and Social Sciences (DLSSE) in various capacities. He was nominated to serve in the 2009 an ad-hoc committee on Marketing Strategy for the Department of Languages and Social Sciences Education. From 2002 to 2004, Dr. Ketlhoilwe has served as a Departmental Board Secretary. From 2001 to 2004 he was a member and Secretary to the Faculty of Education Committee on HIV/AIDS. As the Secretary to the Faculty Committee he also represented the Faculty of Education together with the Chairperson at the University Wide Committee on HIV/AIDS. Dr Ketlhoilwe is a member of the Management Committee for the Centre of Study for Renewable and Sustainable Energy since 2007. His role in this committee is to oversee training and education.

Since 1999 to date, Dr. Ketlhoilwe has been representing the University of Botswana in the Panel of experts in Environmental Education in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development in the Department of Curriculum Development and Evaluation. His role is to provide expert advice to the Department on infusion of environmental education across the curriculum and on resources selection and recommendation for different levels at both secondary and primary sectors. He has been involved in service training of education officers and teachers at workshops to demonstrate how environmental education should be infused and integrated.

Dr Ketlhoilwe is also serving as a representative of the Department of Languages and Social Sciences Education in the Faculty of Education Regulations Review Committee. The committee is composed of all Faculty of Education Departments under the leadership of the Deputy Dean of Education. Currently, Dr Ketlhoilwe is a member of the newly (2009) launched University of Botswana Environmental Sustainability Charter and the Management Committee for the Centre of Study for Renewable and Sustainable Energy. He has also published six refereed journals, one book chapter, two papers in refereed conference proceedings, and five technical reports.

Professor Ama was born on July 27, 1952 in Okpo Ihechiowa, Arochukwu Local Government Area, Abia State in Nigeria. Ama has had all his University education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he obtained the Degrees of Bachelor in Science in Statistics, a Master of Science in Experimental Design and Doctor of Philosophy in Experimental Design. His academic career covers services at the University of Nigeria (1981-1995), University of Swaziland (1995-1999), University of Namibia (1999-2003) and University of Botswana (2003 to present).

While at the University of Namibia, Prof Ama served as Head of Department of Statistics and in various committees of that university including the Senate. He joined the University of Botswana as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Statistics in the  Faculty of Social Sciences in June 2003 and has served in many capacities as a member of the Quality Assurance Committee, Examination Coordinator for the Department and also in many Faculty Committees including the Faculty of Social Sciences Research Committee, Faculty Appraisal and Promotion Committee, Faculty representative at Faculty of Education Board, ADHOC Committee investigating poor performance of students in Statistics set up by the Faculty of Social Sciences, and currently Faculty representative at the University Research Committee.
Ama’s research and publications cover areas of Education, Public Health, Statistical modeling of contingency data, HIV/AIDS, and patent and innovations. He has to his credit 18 published  journal articles in international, regional and local journals, one book, one book chapter, two published conference proceedings, 12 unpublished conference papers and eight research reports. One of his latest publications in the area of HIV on estimating the cost of care giving for people living with HIV and AIDS in Botswana in the Journal of International AIDS Society has been widely received and generated a lot of interests globally.
