As a UB distance-learning student, you are entitled to use library services. To do so, you will need to know how to use the services. This guide describes the services available to you. For UB Library, distance learners includes students in programmes such as Certificate in Adult Education (CAE), Diploma in Primary Education (DPE), Masters in Education by Flexi-mode (MEd) and programmes run by the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) most of which are part-time. This is a Section of the UB library mandated to provide services for distance and off-campus to UB registered students. Specific services are being developed. This page will provide information to UB distance learning students on the services, rules and regulations that apply. The UBL collection focuses on materials that support programs offered by University. Materials in the UB Library are generally at a university level. The collection has specific strengths in Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Engineering and Technology. Some materials in the Library's collection are restricted to use within the library.
Library staff will assist with the use of Library resources, including CD-ROM databases. Library staff cannot assist with software and resources not supported by the University, such as Hot Mail, Yahoo and e-Mail. All patrons are expected to abide by the policies of the University.
Once you are a registered UB student you can borrow books. Books can be posted to addresses provided on the registration form. There is no charge for these services, but you are to pay for the cost of return postage. We provide an envelop for return mail. There is a charge for late returns. Books should be returned by post to Head, Circulation Services, UBL, Private Bag 00390, Gaborone. Since you are responsible for items borrowed until received by the library, you are advised to keep proof of posting. The loan period is 4 weeks.
The following materials do not circulate: Journal issues; Items in the Reference Collection; Botswana Documentation and Special Collection.
Materials may be renewed from the UB Library WEBOPAC using "View Your Record, or by contacting the UB Library directly by phone. Renewals are normally granted unless an item is on hold for another customer or has been recalled for another customer.
The Library will attempt to borrow items not available in the collection through Interlibrary Loan service.
Requests for periodical articles should be sent directly to Periodicals Librarian who will supply you with details of costs. Current cost of photocopying is P0.20 per A4 page, plus postage costs. Advance payment and a copyright clearance form signed by you should be sent with each request.
The Library's audio-visual equipment and items is for the use of UB staff, faculty and students.A list of available video-recordings can be found on the library OPAC.
It is possible to access the library's online catalogue (OPAC) from off-campus using the Internet via http://library.ub.bw/

The UB Library subscribes to a number of database services for journal articles. External users may access these databases on site in the UB Library.
