Department of Economics

The Department of Economics is one of the original and major Departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Botswana. It has an establishment of 25 members of Staff (lecturers to full professors). Almost half are senior members (Senior Lecturers, Associate Professors and Professors). Overall 16 of the members of staff have doctoral degrees and 5 are currently on study leave for the same.

Areas of research interest and consultancy for the staff are very diversified. They include, among others, issues related to:

  1. Agricultural and food security;
  2. Industrial Economics and Managerial Economics;
  3. Resource and Environmental Economics;
  4. Public Policy and Privatisation;
  5. Labour market, unemployment, poverty and gender;
  6. Money, banking and finance
  7. Econometric and CGE modeling;
  8. International trade including exchange rate
  9. Health Economics including HIV/AIDS
  10. Globalisation and Economic development

At the undergraduate level, the Department offers both single major and combined four year programmes. A programme in Minor in Economics is also included. At graduate level the Department offers a full-time (two year) MA (Econ) and MA (Applied Economics). The latter programme is designed for professionals who may not necessarily seek to pursue an academic career but are interested in studying applied economics (economics in policy analysis and research). Since many people interested in this programme are likely to be already employed the programme may also be done on part-time basis. The Department is also in the process of establishing a PhD programme. For the MA Economics programme,  the Department offers the core programme and optional courses. However, two more elective courses are normally offered at the Joint Facility for Electives (JFE) in Nairobi, Kenya. This arrangement is for the Anglophone Universities (Except Nigeria) in Sub-Saharan Africa which the Department has participated in since 1993..
