Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at UB was founded in 1992 and currently offers four degree programmes, namely, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, Master of Science in Computer Science, and Master of Science in Computer Information Systems. It also offers basic computing and information skills courses to all faculties of  the University, and a Bachelor of Information Systems degree offered jointly with the Department of Library and Information Studies and the Department of Accounting and Finance. The Department has an annual intake of around 100 undergraduate, and 10 postgraduate students and a staff compliment of 28 academic staff and 7 technical staff.

The Department of Computer Science has extensive computing facilities that are continuously being upgraded and improved. It has four laboratories each equipped with 30 machines for undergraduate teaching and projects, and two laboratories each equipped with 15 machines for postgraduate students. The machines all offer Windows-based personal computing, but also have access to the UNIX environment. There is also a smaller laboratory equipped with 10 Solaris workstations available for research students and staff.

The Department has in place an extensive personal tutoring scheme for the pastoral care of our students. Each student of the Department is assigned a personal tutor and there is a Head Tutor who is in overall charge of the scheme. In addition, each level of the degree programme has a Coordinator that handles matters specific to courses taught at that level. At the end of level 300, students proceed for Industrial Attachment where the get a chance to gain first hand knowledge of the computer scientist's workplace. Students are supervised in this assignment by a member of staff of the Department and one from the workplace.

The Department of Computer Science is a lively and friendly environment for both staff and students. At the heart of our motivational philosophy is the relationship among staff members and between staff and students. The Department has some of the most talented and dedicated staff from whom students learn and can count on as life-long mentors and friends.
