Department of Geology

The Department of Geology was founded in 1979 and the first B.Sc. Geology class graduated in 1983. In its early years, the department produced a handful of B.Sc. graduates annually. Numbers have steadily increased and fourteen graduates were present in 2005. Staff numbers have increased from an initial three academic positions to the present twelve academic, five technical positions and a departmental secretary.

The Faculty of Science, in which the department is housed, offers a four year B.Sc. programme. During the first year, students must take courses in Mathematics and choose courses from Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Physics. Credits in General Education Courses in Computer Science and Communications and Study Skills must also be taken.

The Geology programme starts at level 100 with options for a Single Major or Combined Degree starting at level 200. The Course content and structure of the Geology programme is regularly reviewed to address current needs and trends in the geosciences. All programmes in the University have been reviewed to provide fully semesterized programmes which commenced in the 2002/2003 academic year.

The Department also offers an M.Sc. (Hydrogeology) programme that was approved in 1999 and commenced in the 2002/2003 academic year. This programme is offered on a two-year, full-time basis. The first year consists of course work, while the second year is for research work. Options for part-time studies and modular delivery of courses will become available in due course.
