Affiliated Institutions Unit

The Affiliated Institutions Unit (AIU) is located in the Centre for Academic Development and is responsible for implementing and overseeing the affiliation process. The Unit reports to the Director Centre for Academic Development. Its structure comprises: The Deputy Director, Assistant Director - Health Training Institutions, Assistant Director-Colleges of Education, Centre Administrator and Personal Secretary.

In line with the University of Botswana's Vision to be a Centre of Excellence, the Affiliated Institutions Unit is a Key agent in promoting academic excellence in tertiary institutions affiliated and linked to the University of Botswana.

In accord with the commitment of the University and the Centre for Academic Development to academic excellence, the mission of the Affiliated Institutions Unit is to implement and monitor affiliatory and validation system featuring benchmarking practices.

Purpose of Affiliation and Validation

  • Promotion of quality through scheduled monitoring visits.
  • Encouraging institutions to maintain standards through quality management systems.
  • Promotion of institutional development by providing feedback to institutions through workshops and seminars on specific areas for development/improvement.

Institutions offering Diploma programmes supported by cognate fields in the University.

Definition of Terms

Affiliation, Validation and Cognate Field

Affiliation is the process whereby the University approves the programmes and grants the awards of an institution affiliated to it.

Affiliated Institutions in our context are those institutions affiliated to the University of Botswana.

Validated Awards are the awards made by institutions offering programmes validated by the University of Botswana that lead to awards validated by the University.

Cognate Field is a field of academic and professional study in which areas dealt with are allied in characteristic e.g.  Faculty of Education and Colleges of Education offer programmes in a cognate field - teacher education.
